Pros

Great coworkers in the engineering group. Accommodating when "stuff happens" (sick kid, car breakdown etc) . Product/platform was designed for a very noble purpose.

Cons

The engineering group is being overworked to the point of burnout. Staff have left in droves and where it was common to see staff with 10-15 years of tenure, most new staff now leave within 1-2 years. Poor compensation. Staff are paid under market value and not given consistent performance reviews, raises or paths for advancement. Employees are offered new titles and greater responsibility without corresponding pay adjustments. Improvements have been promised for several years but have been slow to roll out. Heroism is encouraged (12-16 hour work days).

Pros

Renaissance is a company that re-invents itself regularly in order to solve the various challenges it faces. Its mission to accelerate learning for all is at the core of any and all decisions it makes. Renaissance has made great strides in improving its HR processes over the last couple of years though more work is required for it to match top-tier tech industry standards. With its move to AWS, Renaissance is playing with some very cool modern technologies.

Cons

Renaissance is moving from its own self-hosted cloud to AWS and the move hasn't gone as smoothly as desired. This has resulted in a number of less-than-ideal compromises, including the (originally temporary but now in its 3rd year) expectation that the subset of R&D employees contributing to a particular release be available on hand for late-evening or weekend deployments of their new features into production. This is generally above and beyond regular work hours with lieu time rarely being offered as compensation.
