Pros

- Some real talented colleagues who you can learn from (but can't deliver their best work due to the environment)

Cons

- CEO incapable of running the company. Imposes his own opinions on everything - Financial mistakes at top level led to a third of the company being made redundant overnight. - Toxic work culture - Employees made to feel their ideas are useless Edit: In reply to ProWritingAid's response to this post, whilst the industry is changing, the cause of layoffs was communicated to the team and it was not a strategic play. The response is another sign of management's inability to be honest and accept responsibility for their mistakes.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely regret that your experience was less than satisfactory, and we value the honesty in your perspective. We want to provide some context regarding the changes you've observed. Our industry is undergoing a significant transformation, heavily influenced by the advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs). These changes have compelled us to strategically refocus our efforts to stay competitive. It’s a tough reality, but these industry-wide shifts have led many companies, including ours, to make difficult decisions. For example, a similar company recently had to reduce its workforce by over 200 employees. We understand that the full scope of these strategic decisions might not be clear to every team member, and we are committed to improving communication and transparency moving forward.

Pros

-Fully remote company -Smart colleagues

Cons

-Emergence of AI has hurt company growth with little opportunity to return to growth. -Poor, inexperienced management has led to frequent pivoting (projects stopped/started based on opinions and not data) -As it's a startup, most of the managers became managers by simply being at the company and are more ICs. They lack training and the softer skills required to be effective people managers. -Like most of tech, there have been layoffs (including 1/2 the company during one round) -CEO smiles on camera and during company meetings, but 1 on 1 is condescending and threatening. Unfortunately this makes for a toxic environment. -Product is behind competitors. New updates are simply the same features bundled under a new name (AI!) or are attempts at reaching parity with competition.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We always appreciate hearing from former team members, even when the perspective is critical. On the emergence of AI: It’s true that the rapid rise of AI has created shifts across our industry, including for us. However, we don’t view this as a threat but as one of the most exciting opportunities in our company’s history. It has allowed us to reimagine how we support storytellers and has led to some bold strategic pivots. While change is never easy, we believe these decisions are setting us up for long-term success. On leadership and management: We’re proud of the experience within our leadership team, which includes individuals who’ve held senior roles at respected tech companies. That said, like many scaling organizations, we’ve had to grow and evolve quickly. We recognize that effective management requires not just domain expertise but also strong people leadership, and we’re investing in upskilling and leadership development to ensure every manager is supported. On layoffs: It’s important to clarify that it is factually incorrect that half the company was laid off in a single round. Like many tech companies, we’ve had to make difficult decisions in response to market conditions, but these were made thoughtfully and communicated transparently. On culture and the CEO: We regret that your experience with leadership felt negative. Our CEO and leadership team strive to foster a respectful, empowering environment. We take any perception of toxicity seriously and are committed to continuous improvement through open feedback channels and employee engagement initiatives. On the product: We’re continuously developing and evolving our product to meet the needs of modern writers. Some features are indeed AI-powered, but not for the sake of hype—our aim is to meaningfully enhance the writing experience. Innovation and differentiation remain top priorities, and we’re proud of what we’re building. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors and thank you again for sharing your thoughts.
