Great place if you have absolutely no life

Pros

-Decent pay -Great students -Can further your teaching career in China (if you can put the full 2-years in, if not say bye to any type of reference)

Cons

-If you do not plan on staying for your full contract DO NOT work here, they will not give you a release letter (which is pretty much illegal) and you will be forced to leave China without the option of working at another, better school. -Management expects A LOT of hours and work out of you, but treat you very disposable. -They use the great students as an incentive (the only incentive) to work much past your contracted hours. You will be forced to supervise and take part in almost all of the extra-curricular activities because they have no one else and guilt you into it. This sounds fun, but adds many hours to your work week. -Shockingly low levels of support for a school that flies you to a new country. You are expected to adjust with absolutely no support from staff or authoritative figures. Also very, very little training involved. -Maple Leaf is bottom of the barrel in terms of International schools in China, therefore have been accepting more and more under-developed and under-qualified students with very low English levels in order to make money, this can make teaching much more difficult than you would expect and much less enjoyable, as you're basically an ESL teacher, not a "BC Certified" high school teacher. -Of the 30 BC staff members, I knew about 4 who enjoyed their job here. **Maple Leaf is a business firstly, and a school secondly

Pros

Salary was decent and you got always got paid on time. There were opportunities to travel during the year. Most kids were a pleasure to teach.

Cons

Let me start by saying that every school has it's downsides and I am going to focus on my experience of how things were. Overall, there is a need for more clarity, transparency, and open communication. There is a lack of professionalism, integrity, and morale The downsides? - turnover rate (more is done to hire new teachers than retain teachers) - negative clicks (nitpicking, negative talk, etc. - and not addressing those issues) - Nepotism (at a very high level and obvious) - Major communication problems (in various ways) - Inconsistency in following polices/contract

Pros

Lots of room for advancement. Students are respectful and eager to learn. Great experience for people who have not travelled much.

Cons

Depending on the school location, the transition and culture shock is always hard. Long work days are a con but are expected.
