Pros

-Decent pay -Great students -Can further your teaching career in China (if you can put the full 2-years in, if not say bye to any type of reference)

Cons

-If you do not plan on staying for your full contract DO NOT work here, they will not give you a release letter (which is pretty much illegal) and you will be forced to leave China without the option of working at another, better school. -Management expects A LOT of hours and work out of you, but treat you very disposable. -They use the great students as an incentive (the only incentive) to work much past your contracted hours. You will be forced to supervise and take part in almost all of the extra-curricular activities because they have no one else and guilt you into it. This sounds fun, but adds many hours to your work week. -Shockingly low levels of support for a school that flies you to a new country. You are expected to adjust with absolutely no support from staff or authoritative figures. Also very, very little training involved. -Maple Leaf is bottom of the barrel in terms of International schools in China, therefore have been accepting more and more under-developed and under-qualified students with very low English levels in order to make money, this can make teaching much more difficult than you would expect and much less enjoyable, as you're basically an ESL teacher, not a "BC Certified" high school teacher. -Of the 30 BC staff members, I knew about 4 who enjoyed their job here. **Maple Leaf is a business firstly, and a school secondly

Pros

Lots of resources Students are wonderful Administration is nice, but powerless (discussed in the cons)

Cons

FIRST, MAY I BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR FOR THOSE OF YOU CONSIDERING THIS JOB FOR EMPLOYMENT: 1) accommodation IS NOT provided for certified BC teachers, only for ESL teachers 2) The school is cheap cheap cheap cheap to no end cheap! 3) Mould is an issue, it might be in your classroom, in your office, behind your whiteboard 4) classrooms are ill equipped at best; sometimes projectors or speakers don't work, and it is a hassle to get anything replaced There is a reason that most of the staff at this school are new. Maple Leaf is a stepping stone, not a career, its a two years and then flee with all it's resources. Some of your fellow staff members are not professionals, some are upset, one threw himself from a building (or so some say...) etc etc etc. If you like giving out tests, then this is the school for you. If you like marking until you have blisters on your left and right hands, then this is the school for you. This school will overload you with work, and then ask for more. The school has recently increased the rent for teachers who are living on campus. The rent was increased by 50%, but then the teachers revolted. Now the school has argued that they won't increase the rent until next year.... but most international schools pay for a teacher's rent, or subsidize it in your salary.... May I say this again: there are 125 job postings on education Canada for this job every single year, why is that? This school has proven to be a huge disappointment, and I will be more than happy to flee with my two years experience and get out. This school is a joke, at best. Get your two years, and run.
