Pros

The company had a dynamic, supportive culture. The HR and sales leadership were the best I'd ever worked with in the industry. There are some talented people in the design, software, and product teams. At one point the company was not only welcoming of diversity but celebrated it.

Cons

The new executive leadership that was brought in once the private equity firm took over made sweeping changes without even a conversation with the team those decisions impacted. I mean, I had a single one-on-one meeting with my new leader in the entire first year the new private equity team took over. I clearly had questions and was lied to about how and why decisions were being made. Their best attempt at managing the change was to have the entire company read "Who Moved My Cheese?" but there were zero conversations about leadership's own accountability in how decisions are going to be formulated. The best way to describe the change is that it went from being Costa Rica's "pura vida" to North Korea's "just do what we say." Unfortunately, the product itself has become stale and outdated as a result.

Pros

LCOM was a place where good work, kindness, and showing up was celebrated throughout. The company culture had a lot of pride in what they did and the people they did that work with. People were always striving to achieve with a focus on the positive impact they made in the lives of young students. Also truly one of the best HR teams I have ever had the pleasure to work with.

Cons

The change in executive leadership last year, brought a quick change in culture. Deliverables were constantly changing without a clear description of a company goal. Then by the time leadership required everyone to read “Who Moved My Cheese?” we knew that the goal was to change the staff. It became demoralizing once that reality set in. Soon after I saw people lose confidence and pride in their work. The positive messaging of our product, especially the confidence and excitement it brought to students, was soon swapped with negative fear-mongering about the dangers of technology. The company mission changed very quickly and I couldn’t align myself with that trajectory.

Pros

Lots of passionate, intelligent people who will bend over backwards to assist customers and coworkers alike. Headed in the right direction with scaling internal processes, making data-informed decisions. Opportunities to wear lots of different hats and work cross-functionally. Leadership made more effort to communicate with employees during COVID by closing the office starting in mid-March and holding weekly(ish) company-wide remote meetings. David Mills, VP of Technology, genuinely cares about his employees.

Cons

CEO is short-sighted, always looking for a shiny object or big new sale that can keep the ship afloat. No long term vision, no specific business goals or objectives to strive toward, no product roadmap. Lack of focus on retaining existing customers, long-standing technical debt and outdated product content. The company laid off over 20% of staff in July due to projected economic impact of COVID, eliminating roles in almost every department except new business sales.
