Pros

The CEO seems interested in change. Whether he can manage it is another matter. Many have tried and failed.

Cons

As somebody who has worked in Wiley for many years, I had (quite a while ago) heard about the sexual harassment allegations made against the MD of India, which have been repeated on Glassdoor reviews elsewhere. I was willing to reserve judgment, not knowing all the facts. But prior to this, this particular MD did have a reputation around the company for coercing his employees to rate him well on evaluations. At the time, it provided a bit of a harmless chuckle, and people just laughed at the weirdness of this sort of power-tripping. We overlooked the ethical implications, figuring his place as head of India was secure either way. But now that I see a flood of five-star reviews, specifically calling out his name with effusive praise, I can only assume he has once again coerced his direct reports to fill the platform with positive comments and push the negative ones down. The issue is not just this individual, but with the broken culture in Wiley. The leadership of the company pays lip-service to building an empowering environment for working women, but that's all it is: lip-service. The leadership knew of this problem (this is just one -- there are others in other locations) but they chose to overlook it because India is a key rung in their emerging markets strategy.

We posted this on a previous review that addresses the topic you reference but it's worth re-posting here: We are aware of the article and the allegations. Please note all references to Wiley executives being booked are completely untrue. We are not aware of any actual police investigation. This apparently arises from a situation in India almost two years ago and the employee’s claims in this incident, which were taken quite seriously, went through a thorough investigation process including an industrial tribunal and review by an independent committee. The duly constituted panel found that the allegations were not supported by any credible evidence. Our HR executives managed the situation well and acted appropriately. We are currently working to address this false media report more formally with our legal counsel. We remain committed to creating an environment of respect and dignity toward each other and ensuring we all adhere to our standards for business and social conduct.

Pros

Nice coworkers and managers, work-life balance, smart people and industry, opportunities to grow skillset. If you volunteer for opportunities, you will be supported and will learn a lot about the industry.

Cons

Pay and hybrid office work

Pros

Decent pay and benefits for publishing.

Cons

Once of the most toxic work environments I've ever worked at. Upper management tears editors down if you are not a favorite. Favorites are chosen by metrics that do not exist, and are subjective and arbitrary. Wiley is losing money because brilliant, young editors leave due to no support and toxic work environments. Wiley Trade is essentially a hybrid publisher. Author's put a lot of money into their book -- too much. There is very very little marketing and publicity support for authors. But they brand as more than there actually is. All in all a very sad place to work and sad for authors.
