Pros
The two things that kept me going here are the pay and some of my coworkers. The pay is well above minimum wage and raises are offered after the first year. Also, a good percentage of the people that I worked around were some of the nicest people I have met. They seemed to appreicate what I do and understand that cart pushing is not as easy as it sounds. There is a 10% discount card, but it ends up being a lot less after taxes. Also, Wal-Mart is not going anywhere anytime soon, so it is secure. And it is a job. And if you love being treated like crap, this job is for YOU!
Cons
Wal-Mart expects you to devote your life to them, even for part-timers. As a college student, going to class is *kinda* important (read: crucial) and Wal-Mart failed to understand this. They down-right refused to change my availability until I was forced to call out so many times to the point where it finally became a noticeable problem. Even then, they changed it begrudgingly. In fact, there were numerous times that they changed my availability without informing me of such changes, and as a result, I was scheduled right during class time. Thus, I was forced to make a decision between work and school, with work winning out 9 out of 10 times. I have them to thank for my not too good GPA (To be honest, I'm not a person to blame others for my misfortune, but its kinda hard to do five courses and a 35-40 hour work week, which includes lunches and transportation time) Speaking of management, anyone with the word "supervisor" or "manager" in their job title will most likely be incompetent and degrading towards you. This mainly pertains to Assistant/Co-Managers, the Store Manager themselves, and most Customer Service Managers/Supervisors. With the exception of maybe one to three nice CSMs/CSSs, expect to be viewed as lazy and self-centered. Also, expect to be chewed out constantly. With that said, male management seems to be really laid back, while female management (including the manager that "sees" over me) seems to be really bitchy and condesending. Why things are like this is still a mystery to me. Finally, expect no slack. You are in the lowest paid position in the store and yet you will do more work than a majority of sales associates. You'll be working in every bad weather condition from heavy downpouring rain to the worst snowstorms you have ever seen. YES, customers still come in and leave their carts all over the parking lot in this weather. Hell, they do it all the time. Now imagine doing all this, plus carryouts and moving electric carts, by yourself or with an actual lazy co-worker. If you are thinking what I'm thinking, yes, it CANNOT be done. Long story short, Wal-Mart is pretty much a crappy employer. Honestly, the only reason why I took it was the pay. And I got what I get paid for.
