Good benefits, unsupportive management - Developer Vanguard Employee Review

Pros

Benefits are good. Work-life balance is not great but not awful. There are a lot of opportunities to move within the company. This would be a great company to retire in.

Cons

Not a nurturing environment for young people. Managers are quick to write people off and unwilling to truly support new hires. Managers' favorites are given exciting projects, whereas those who had a slower start never recover. Code is extremely antiquated, and suggestions for widespread code updates are promptly squashed. I have not once felt appreciated or supported, despite my best efforts to make up for having a slower start. Some managers are very obvious about who their favorites are and even seem to have some racial bias. Upper management is disengaged and uninvolved in their direct reports. Business clients come first, even if it's at the detriment of developers. IT salaries are on the low end, compared to the rest of the industry. To me, Vanguard's culture felt like a facade meant to hide outdated coding practices, negligent management and a company that is--pardon my harshness--only ideal for people who plan to die here. If you are a young professional who has been floundering or considering leaving Vanguard, please take this as your sign to leave. I wanted to love Vanguard, but I had a very unpleasant experience. I ignored many signs that I should leave, thinking I could make it work. I do not regret my slow start nor my occasional mistakes, but I do regret not leaving sooner.

Pros

Awesome coworkers for young professionals. Paid licensing for a few months.

Cons

Micromanagement is out of control. Incompetent team leaders who are obsessed with power and metrics. Back to back calls, limited support, and nearly impossible effective communication between departments. Zero time to cultivate culture because you are taking calls every second of the day except for 30min/1hr lunch and two 15 minute breaks. You’re locked into your role for over a year (apprenticeship for around 60 days, then a year after promotion to associate) and your team leaders will not approve internal applications unless you are “eligible”.
