Pros

You learn a lot about what not to do and red flags to look for when working for another company

Cons

Everything No work life balance, the unwritten expectation is to be on call and work 24/7 You are held accountable for other people’s mistakes. If routing does not deliver and the customer leaves Sysco, you are the one who pays for it, because you hold the negative. Same for merchandising, pickers, and periscope pricing. The other departments aren’t out to get you, but if a mistake is made the finger points to you. So in short, you are at the mercy of other peoples decisions. You have no control, you can only contact the people who do and wait for a response. The one thing we could control (prices) has now moved to revenue management which require an email begging them to give you a price. Underpaid! You already don’t make much but then they introduce incentives for customers… well rebate money comes out of your GP dollars. If you are currently working for Sysco take a look when your customer cash’s in on the rebate. A negative will appear on your sales. Greedy company - Sysco has record profits, but “we’re suffering”. Sysco introduces incentives and makes you pay for it, while not telling you about it. Periscope is designed to keep prices high to maximize profits. Every exception is a fight and will be dropped the following week. Our holiday boxes have gone to garbage, breakfast at GSM’s is the lowest quality we have, we have less sales reps and lower salaries. Keep the stock holders happy with profits. Lastly - so many boxes to check, your day of selling and meeting customers has turned into sending emails, doing paper work, scheduling through salesforce, and begging for prices. Your day revolves around the computer and every so often they add a new thing to your plate. Not to help you, but to micromanage and monitor you.

Pros

You can make money but it all depends on the orders you get, how fast you can go, how long you can maintain that pace without getting burned out. Definitely a young mans sport, as the do refer to you as "industrial athletes."

Cons

Like many industries the hours can be long. For the ones who don't make much on running above rate then you can make up for it in hours. If you soak the hours and run you can definitely make some big money. The turn over rate is extremely high there, even in management. I used to be proud of the union but the teamsters in Cleveland are completely worthless, I would bet they are getting paid under the table to not fight for contract negotiations. When I was there the contract expired and they barely fought for anything, on voting day they literally said they wont back us up if we don't pass this contract....so consider that when you want to work for this place. Also the equipment is so old and broken that people were taking the scanners home just so they could have a good one for the next night.
