Pros

My coworkers are great—many have become close friends

Cons

As management squeezes every ounce of productivity out of the workforce, all while offering little in return, the environment has become one of employee burnout and disengagement. Employees face unsustainable workloads due to rampant layoffs and restructuring. Management disregards requests for fair compensation and instead touts the "joy of science" as adequate reward for grueling hours and menial tasks. The only perks appear to be reserved for senior leadership, who enjoy high salaries while dismissing the financial struggles of their staff as inconsequential. Promotion paths are illusory, often riddled with politics, nepotism, and external hiring at the expense of internal growth. Employees are routinely led to believe that career development and internal promotions are within reach, only to find these assurances are nothing more than a tease. Any attempt to excel or contribute meaningfully feels futile in a system so blatantly uninterested in recognizing or rewarding effort. While other companies offer stock options and bonuses as incentives, STEMCELL rewards high-performing employees with chocolates from the 'fairy godmother' The decision-makers are out-of-touch scientists with little understanding of how to run a business effectively. Their poor choices lead to financial instability yet they are not held accountable and it is the “unproductive” junior employees who are laid-off. The fear of job loss has been weaponized as the primary motivator for work. Employee surveys and skip-level meetings, which could be valuable tools for improvement, are ignored or even used to implement the opposite of what employee’s request. Over the years, staff have asked for better pay, a clear promotion paths, reduced parking fees, better health benefits, and flexible hours. These requests have been met with salary reductions, more barriers to promotion, increased parking fees, parental leave cutbacks and an Orwellian key card tracking system to track the hours employees work. By fostering a culture of micromanagement and mistrust, workers feel more alienated from a leadership team that seems clueless about the challenges employees face. STEMCELL’s management sits high up in their ivory tower, handing down decisions that often go completely against what employees actually need or want. Don’t be deceived by fake puff positive reviews, this is a 1-star company. With no structured pathways for advancement, no meaningful communication from leadership, and no tangible incentives for excellence, employees are left feeling like cogs in a poorly run machine.

Pros

Good quality products. Dedicated individual contributors, intelligent colleagues.

Cons

Living in a bubble. They still think they are in the 90s. The thinking is painstakingly slow. Senior management including VPs and senior VPs are extremely inbred in their thinking. They are all perfectly aligned in completely wrong direction. They do the bare minimum and some cannot even hold a decent intellectual conversation. There is a ton of favoritism and only yes men get promoted so everyone is ‘aligned’. If you want to do mundane level thinking and kill your creativity and innovative spirit join this company. It has gotten worse in the last few years. Those currently there are dying to leave but just hanging by the last thread just because the current market is so tight that there is nowhere to go. The senior execs are there for 15-20 years no because they are loyal but because they know they cannot find any other employer who would tolerate their slow thinking.
