Pros

Working on globally recognized franchises like Dawn of War, Company of Heroes and Age of Empires brings a unique sense of purpose and pride. The people at Relic have incredible depth of experience - many have decades in the industry - and are generous in sharing knowledge and mentorship. The studio offers competitive benefits, and the office itself is beautiful and located in a very strategic part of Vancouver.

Cons

Like many studios, Relic was significantly affected by the recent challenges in the gaming industry, which have understandably limited career growth opportunities in the short term. SEGA’s ownership period brought stability and resources, but its corporate direction sometimes constrained Relic’s potential to fully express its own creative and strategic strengths. There’s genuine hope that the studio’s new direction will give it more freedom to thrive and recapture its best form.

Pros

Individual bathrooms are great for women that don't want to share it with anyone else who wishes to use it.

Cons

Steam Reviews Dawn of War III (released 2017) All Reviews: Mixed 49% Company of Heroes 3 (released 2023) All Reviews: Mixed 53% The following information is a mix of facts, opinion and many years of experience working for Relic Entertainment. Recently, 121 people of a 300+ person company were let go. That is essentially the entire team of COH 3. This is what happens when a company chooses to go woke, you go broke. Relic is a toxic studio with some narcissistic people in high position roles. It is those types of people who are responsible for Relic’s soon to be permanent closure. Some of these people have worked there for over 20 years and all they get is a maximum of 5 months’ severance, sad. Relican’s, don’t get excited about that severance check, you cannot collect EI in Canada until the entire severance check is depleted. It will be 10-14 months before you’ll be able to start your EI claim. Relic’s games up till 2013/14 were very successful reaching Steam scores in the high 80’s. In 2013 Relic was acquired by SEGA. Some new faces showed up and some promotions were given. It was at this moment that Relic's failures began. Relic Entertainment is a war game company. And you would think given that genre that similar minded people would be working there. Yes, there are a handful of people that are no stranger to fitness and have had some sort of sport, military training, paintball experience etc. It would only make sense to see people with those desires and interests involved in an all war game studio. But when you walk through the studio, when you look at the desks you may be surprised to see a softer tone of stuffed animals, butterflies and unicorns. It looks as if you’re walking through a Pixar studio. Over time these people hired similar people and then alas…..you have a war game company with the majority of people not having any related real world experiences. The people and look of the studio represent something more suited for a children’s game studio. One of the main reasons why COH3 and DOW3 failed was due to the soft, happy, and friendly looking WAR GAMES! The culture at Relic is juvenile mindset centric. You’ll see many single grown men spending their lunch hour and after work painting toy figures to use in a board game they made by hand. On many days you’ll see employees bring luggage’s to and from work…..this is how they transport the handmade board games home on the weekends and back to the office on Mon. It’s a much laid back, do nothing but sit related activities. Topics of conversation around the water cooler usually involve climate change, toppling statues of the day, which protest to attend and bash everything American related. It really is a one sided, complain about rent, equality, fascism and everything that doesn’t coincide with the typical far leftist mindset. Working for Relic during Covid was odd. It was odd to need a proof of covid vax, but not monkeypox despite the large amount “high risk people” at the studio. It was odd to try and make a war game during the summer of 2020 the news was filled with Burning, Looting and Murdering. It seemed wrong to make a war game when innocent Asian people in Canada/US were randomly being attacked daily, by a group of dark minded people. This sort of news made its way in the social networks of the company. Plenty of support and emails about BLM, Queer community, Indigenous people and tons of info about covid. But once the camera footage showed what kind of people were responsible for the Asian hate... it suddenly wasn’t a topic of concern at Relic. You will see the LGBT stickers/flags on many doors and around every corner but you will not see one Stop Asian Hate sticker or any support for this on their social media pages or in the studio. If you’re queer you’ll be happy to know that Relic will celebrate Pride every day of the year. But for some reason Relic will not set aside one month, not one week, not even one day to show support for the disabled staff, to show support for cancer survivors, domestic abuse, not even to celebrate the beauty of motherhood. Relic labels itself as a safe space for queers, but I only remember hearing daily attacks on Asians. Everyday some evil dark minded person would sucker punch or kill an elderly Asian person, but Relic thinks queers are being hunted in the streets like animals for some reason. SEGA/Relic created such a massive studio divide by choosing to be a woke far leftist studio. It is foolish to choose any side and expect there to be harmony. They have publicly donated to many causes such as BLM and Pro Abortion groups but couldn’t care less about the massive amount of Asian hate or abuse of women in sports. Relic only supports far leftist groups. Not many Asian people work for Relic and it’s obvious why. For those of you that are not from Canada you may be shocked to hear that Relic supports the termination of a fully grown baby up till the day of birth. Funny how I don’t recall any support for the Asian community via donation….I didn’t see any Asian Lives Matter stickers on the front door, littered throughout the lobby or on social media. But for some reason you have rainbow flags everywhere. For some reason you think people in the LGBTaBc2+2=7 group are in danger. Hypocrites. The turnover rate at Relic is pretty bad. For years people would come and go quickly. I remember one time so many people were quitting at once that the top level Producers were taking people out for coffee individually and asking them outright why they think people want to leave Relic. It was easy to tell when someone quit the studio as a goodbye email would be sent out to the entire staff. Well yet again many of the departure emails were coming in fast and that sort of thing can get you to wonder if other people know something you don’t know. Obviously Relic didn’t want everyone in the studio to see this mass exodus, so they stopped sending out the goodbye emails. No joke, they actually stopped making it public company info. They would only notify a handful of people that would need to know and that’s it. Except this one time. This was shocking. The entire team of over 100 people at the time woke up to a sudden morning meeting, one of the many Lead’s was fired. But instead of just emailing a few of our co-workers they decided to spend close to 1 hour explaining why he was fired. A group of top level people all took turns, going into detail about the last 2 years of this person’s wrong doings. I have never seen anything like this. They ruined this person’s career by telling over 100 people about it. This person with a family to feed will not get a good job in Canada ever again. They should have just sent out an email months later about how to behave in the office, but no they decided to make an example out of this person. Instead of just firing the person and letting them learn from that, they went and ruined that person's career. After wasting an hour listing to what happened it was pretty clear that this was nothing more than a couple people that were overly sensitive, didn’t know how to deal with life and just let it bottle up for years. This person was moody and cocky. That person wasn’t the best leader, but didn’t deserve the shout-out firing. In short, they allowed someone who they believed to be toxic to continue to behave that way for 2 years.

Pros

Good Pay. Good Benefits. Great Employees. Generally pleasant work environment.

Cons

Customer wishes are often ignored. Though treated well, the concerns of employees often at least seem to be ignored. Note: I left the company for personal reasons, my leaving the company does not in any way reflect negatively on the company.
