Pros

- Easy to drop shifts/have them covered by someone else

Cons

- Not properly trained about fashion or how to sell clothing in general. They have one day of training that basically just teaches you how to work a register and some other basic tasks. - Managers are untrusting of employees and not much recognition even though you go above and beyond for each customer, and even though customers praise you. Basically, even if you’re an amazing employee and work hard, you still get paid terribly and don’t get recognized in any meaningful way. - I got paid pretty much minimum wage, $9.25 in CA 3 years ago. They’ll pay you the lowest they can and rarely give you an increase even if you’re a star employee. - Can be difficult to get hours during some seasons - Managers constantly hound you to open credit cards, I’ve also witnessed unethical practices where employees enter false information or tell customers to enter false information on their credit application so that they get approved easily. It’s disgusting. - There is no sense of camaraderie amongst employees. Most of your co-workers will be very selfish since everyone is given a sales goal every day. They will be sneaky and try to steal your customers and sales, especially when you first start working there. If you do end up working their don’t care so much about your sales goal and just be chill, at the end of the day it’s just minimum wage. - They hire literally anyone with a beating heart. I didn’t even have an in-person interview and was hired on the spot during a phone interview. It’s laughable the type of employees that they hire. - The customers that Macy’s attracts aren’t the best to work with, always looking for discounts and the constant coupons are so annoying to deal with. - Confusing sales and coupon disclaimers constantly confuse customers who don’t read fine print. Constantly will be explaining to customers why their coupons aren’t working and why their item is excluded from the sale.

Pros

you get ok pto even as a part timer, not physically demanding, good A/C and heating depending on the weather.

Cons

very low pay compared to other businesses, you only get a 40 cent raise every year. same playlist consisting of 15 songs on repeat and it drives you crazy as time goes on. very inconsistent hours they rarely give morning shifts, you only get the more undesirable shifts like closing which ends at 9:30pm. the sales goals will be exceeded and they hours will still be cut especially around the holiday season. numerous amounts of time where i am left alone at the register on a busy day with no backup and still expected to clean fitting rooms and recover the floor with no help. overall no room for growth, started when i was 18 and am now 20 and have not even been considered or offered a higher position, 2 tiny raises is all i got. i overall feel like my position is bottom of the barrel compared to asset protection, jewelry department, and fragrance sales because they get paid better and make commission while doing less easier work. would not recommend and if you do end up working at a Macys use the experience you have and never stop applying to jobs because there really is no growth here.
