Pros

Three weeks of vacation starting out. But that's as much as you'll get. If you last six years, you get those three weeks plus a 6 week sabbatical. Sick time off is paid and limitless, practically speaking. In my time there every single person in my department missed at least one entire week of work by being sick, save for one guy. You call in sick for a week? No one bats an eyelash.

Cons

Politics galore. Good ol' boy networking, politically correct style. Wages are artificially held low by a ridiculous algorithm referred to as The Curve. If you complain about your wage or your raise, you are referred to The Curve as the culprit. When you are new you get the largest raises; when you are seasoned, you get pennies per hour as raises. Also, they have to pick people to not meet expectations during review time, which means someone will have to take the knife in the back and give up the pitiful bonus and raise for the year. Management is deceitful, duplicitous, and arrogant. There is a lot of pretend and role playing, things said and done for appearance's sake alone. Competition between departments for raises and promotions is cut throat by design, but on the other hand they'll tell you we are one team.....from what I heard in my time there, things started to go south when Roche bought them out. Before Roche, it was a delightful company to work for. Now? Well, it depends on who you know and how well you can play that hideous game. I wouldn't go back to work for Genentech at twice the hourly wage I made there. Not ever.

Pros

Genentech's origin story and mission are genuinely inspiring — few companies can point to such a meaningful historical arc in medicine. Patient engagement is taken seriously and feels authentic, not performative. The campus is beautiful and the culture has real warmth.

Cons

DDA is operating with significant gaps. First, the foundational data infrastructure is not mature enough to support the ambitions being set for the team. Second, the measurement culture has gotten ahead of the methodology, and no one in a position of authority seems to be asking hard questions about whether the numbers actually mean what they're being presented as meaning. Third, some management feel disconnected from the work itself, lacking the knowledge, hands-on experience, or relevant credentials. Individually any one of these would be manageable. Together these create an environment where it's hard to do rigorous work, rather work is performative, and be recognized for it.
