Pros

Set your own schedule for the most part. Great if you are a natural sales person or you happen to know a few business owners.

Cons

While I truly believe AFLAC has a great product, the way they go about utilizing their sales associates certainly does not adhere to their reputation. They are one of the most ethical insurance companies in the world... except for how they treat new associates. I would liken it to the way the British used arrows during Medieval battles. They just spray as many out there as they can and see which ones hit. They send you to "sales school" where you go over the "sales lines" and how to respond to certain rebuttals by employers you are trying to get appointment with. One in particular they seem to focus on is "You are the (insert number) AFLAC agent this week." What they didn't tell you is that you would sometimes walk into a business and hear "You are the 5th AFLAC agent TODAY." Talk about saturation! Unless you personally know business owners or are a sorcerer of a sales person, don't even waste your time. Your up front cost will be in the range of $1000 considering State licensing, business attire, business cards, sales materials, gas, vehicle maintenance, etc... I was in the negative when I left. Yes, I LOST money working for AFLAC. Again, I have absolutely nothing against the product. I think it is an amazing product but the means by which they go about selling it left a bad taste for me.

Pros

Freedom to be your own boss, trips, bonuses, renewable income (instead of one time commission), career instead of just a job. FORTUNE 500 and a World's most Ethical Company. Great training (at least here in Wyoming) and a family mentality. Great family/work balance.

Cons

No base pay, can be a slow start at first, you have to be very organized and self-driven, have to be licensed in life and health to sell insurance (but my management help with the process).
