Pros

The largest composite of success best practices in the world. That alone will benefit any employee who works for Dale Carnegie. The business is franchised so you'll see different management in different geographic territories. While the idea is to Manage by the management training, sell by the sales training, and live by the Dale Carnegie Course, and present by the Presentations course, there is still differences and personalities to the leadership. There is a big upside to make a great income. The company and job has a lot of prestige so if you looking for a place where you can show your skills you'll be warmly welcomed by the organization and your clients. It helps to be able to perform well on your feet and to demonstrate great selling skills (caring about others essentially) to be successful. There is a lot of room for a person to make a life-long career. The product offering is HUGE from the traditional public offering (great competitive advantage by the way), the customized corporate solutions (training and consulting), Assessments and profiling, and a large cutting-edge Live On-line offering (Dale Carnegie Digital). You have a great deal of freedom at designing projects that help clients make the changes and gain the growth they want in their industry.

Cons

Evening work (1 - 2 days a week) is an expectation. Pay is not great when you are starting and not very good. Have some stability in your family situation until you get your book of business established. That is just how it is and I've never seen anyone short-cut that and still succeed. Be prepared to be a self-starter if you want to make it, the culture is a self-reliant culture, though very supportive of you learning and growing and making mistakes. Not for someone that wants a traditional 9 - 5 type career. Because its not for the average person, turnover can be high. You can't adequately prepare for this career from traditional school or from past experience, although being able to sell is an advantage.

Pros

Learn principles and concepts that are applicable in personal and professional development

Cons

Franchise owners and trainers are fake, especially their training methods and methodology Hypocrites who don't practice what they preach Cold call all day with little success - big waste of time Don't do any marketing - rely wholly on graduate referrals If you want to win an award in one of the classes, be prepared to share a sobbing story Too rigid, they don't know how to relax and have fun Clicky, especially if you are new to the organization and takes a while for them to let you in Very territorial, competing against other sales associates in the office Very secretive, don't like to reveal too much The successions are very much like an AA meeting but on steroids - somewhat hocky

Pros

You will go through an intensive and proven process for consultative sales and you will work with high-end clients right from the get-go (at least from my lucky experience). If you wish, you can also go through an equally intensive training process to become a first-class corporate trainer. With an international presence, the organization also allows for some travel opportunities. In addition to corporate-oriented training, you will be promoting ancient wisdom about human relations that improves peoples relationships, character, attitudes and personal lives. How cool is that for a feeling of job fulfillment? This knowledge will also enrich your own life. Even though the brand is losing market share and awareness, Dale Carnegie STILL has enviable international recognition, respect and value. You can't go wrong having DC experience on your resume. The people you will work with are passionate and talented, and the organization spends a lot of time and resources developing its people. You will make excellent corporate contacts. You will get a lot out of this job IF you put a lot into it. Not for slackers!

Cons

The pros above are based on my experience at one particular franchise location. Each franchise takes the character and values of it's owner/manager...so do some research on the office culture of the franchise location in your area. Some locations are better to work for than others. The pay is not up to market standards and for sales people it is often straight commission. As I heard one corporate officer from head office remark: "You don't work with Dale Carnegie for the money". That said, you CAN earn a decent living if you become a successful franchise owner, master trainer, or join the corporate office. But this is a tough business and only a select few enter these ranks. It's a large organization...so of course there is a lot of politics. You don't have to get involved. Being a large organization, there is not much room for personal creativity and expression when you are instructing the courses - you are expected to instruct according to the format and material given to you. The organization has been highly UNsuccessful at gaining market share and brand recognition...and I really don't know why that is. I know that part of the answer is that "familiarity breeds contempt" - Carnegie has been around for so long that many businesses pass it by in favor of the newest training flavor of the month. Unfortunately many of these new flavors lack the substance of Carnegie. DC really needs a revolutionary marketing strategy.
