Great place to end a career, not the place for early career

Pros

Work life balance is great, relative to the industry. Highly favorable work to compensation ratio for seniors, less so for everyone else (see below). High level exposure to many different asset classes. Valuable industry insights before going to MBA. Location is remote, which is great if you're trying to raise a family in the suburbs.

Cons

Surface-level financial analysis. If I didn't get a MBA after my time here, I would be disappointed by my career prospects. The work here is interesting from the perspective of learning about different asset classes and geographies, but your technical skills and network will badly lag your peers in finance. Even other fund of funds give juniors more substantive and marketable work. Outdated tech and back-end systems means you spend more of your time doing tasks that you won't do in comparable firms or generally in finance. Below market compensation for juniors with opaque process for annual increases in compensation and promotions . Location is remote, even for Connecticut jobs. Expect to commute half an hour from Stamford, which is the nearest big town. For juniors, this will 100% impact your ability to meet your friends in the city or network for jobs and new opportunities. Highly political working environment. For a place that has a feel good image associated with non-profits and endowments, the level of politics here would make you think you're working in a bigshot NYC shop. When the past generation of senior managers left, culture changed for the worse as the new managers have no interest in their juniors' professional development or even the original non-profit focused mission.

Pros

The overwhelming majority of workers at Commonfund are dedicated and hardworking. Client service is strong.

Cons

Senior Management has been a revolving door. Commonfund is now on its third CEO in five years. Likewise, the Investment, Sales, Operations, Legal, Compliance, Accounting/CFO leadership and team heads have all changed at least once in the last five years. The Wilton office is largely vacant. The NYC office is used by just a handful of people and was obtained, in part, to satisfy the former CEO who primarily lived in NYC.

Declining State

Pros

- Global exposure to alternative investment firms and opportunities - Long history of investing in private capital (one of the oldest) - Started off to help non-profits (focuses on others too now; most of the big endowments and foundations have decided to directly invest) - Culture/Working hours better compared to comparable NYC firms

Cons

- The industry is way too competitive (Bigger firms (i.e. BlackRock/Carlyle/Blackstone/Adams Street/HarbourVest) constantly grab business; they are in fact better with scale/technology; this business is better with scale in a lot of ways). Only a few top/big players will be needed in this industry as technology evolves + sizable institutional investors should directly invest (no one likes extra fees/carry). - Low morale across the firm as fund sizes have been shrinking every year for most of the platforms (VC is okay; note that Silicon Valley's hate for FoFs is indeed growing so should be wary) - Sticks with old ways of executing most things at the firm - Talent retention (others have said this here but the management turnover has been bad) bad due to many factors including location and the fact that the industry is generally declining. The most competent seniors have left for better opportunities/firms. - Not transparent with information regarding the firm or prospects.
