I have been working at BBC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You get to work with some of the most talented people, not just in the broadcast industry, but anywhere. People do the job because they believe in it, and very few organisations can say that. It still means something to say you work in BBC News.

    Cons

Management! Any staffer wil tell you the place is rank with no-hoper, sit-on-their-hands middle management, who never fail to lose themselves in a blizzard of panic, deceit and denial on the first sign of trouble. This leads to staff discipline problems. Nepotism, favouritism and a culture of immunity that gets worse the higher up the corporation you go still prevails. Senior management and the correspondent pool remain overwhelmingly white and Oxbridge educated, some are fabulously well connected individuals, which is a problem for a state funded broadcaster. And don't kid yourself about the work culture. Unofficial shifts of 14-15 hours are still quite common for the worker ants on the shop floor. Plus it can be hard to move on once you reach a certain level, there isn't much opportunity to move around and get multi-skilled, again this causes staff discipline and rota problems.

    Advice to Management

Do the job you are being paid for. Don't ignore trouble until a crisis is brewing. The signs are always there.
