    I worked at BBC

    Pros

Salford offices are fantastic - clean, modern and in a great location Flexible working regarding flexing start/finish times and working from home one day per week Internal training via their in-house ‘Academy’ Good for the CV when looking for a new role

    Cons

There is a lot of arrogance in the BBC that stems from their reputation. This may be true of broadcasting but the supporting teams are anything but world leading. Salaries are not competitive in the market. There is a culture from HR/recruitment to get you to commit to a low salary quickly against a backdrop of other people lined up to take your place if you don’t. This often isn’t the case The under investment in people also extends to technology, product choices, vendors etc which results in an acceptance that things aren’t good enough but can’t be changed. Difficult to challenge ‘old’ ideas - a lot of people have been around for a lot of years and are very defensive of how things have always been done Performance development delivered in name only - objectives are not timely, challenging or even relevant mostly. There are no consequences whatsoever in under or overachieving these, either financially (personal performance is not linked to reward) or for your career progression. Roles are increasingly being pulled/staff are leaving and not being replaced which limits opportunities for growth or promotion Good staff are leaving, often the ones who have only been there a relatively short amount of time, The BBC prides itself in recruiting career returners and women into tech. There is also a high proportion of people who were redundant or had a CV gap before they joined. All indicative of people who have ‘settled’ for a lower salary through lack of choice - creates a very low performing and frustrated workforce.

I worked at BBC full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits, decent culture within departments, great sense of corporate pride (then), and some REALLY exciting and interesting projects.

    Cons

Mediocre salaries, some exceptionally bureaucratic processes for hiring and benefits, some lack of clear direction or mandate. Declining corporate morale, declining trust in leadership. Career progression can be very slow.

I have been working at BBC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - A laid back, friendly and great work life balance. - Interesting tech and wide variety of interesting areas to work in if you move around. - Lots of new projects to work on in the right teams, and space to build out products that are not rushed.

    Cons

    - Very poor pay especially for mid and senior levels. - Rigid career progression with maximum 5% pay rise a year even if you get promoted. - Lots of inept and lazy middle managers who never move on and see it as a job for life. - Fairly top down product process even on the user facing iPlayer and Sounds teams. - Disconnected UX deportment, rarely talking to users and using very waterfall processes.

I have been working at BBC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

As a public service company, the BBC does a lot of good things. Talented people. Many departments are not software-focused, so can be a nice mix of people. Relaxed work environment.

    Cons

Very hierarchical management structure. Often you're told what needs to be done and there's zero interaction with the people who want a feature. Work is often not interesting, sometimes going through mind-numbing periods of repetitive tasks. Laptops are pre-loaded with very old software for emails, etc. Very slow career progression. On paper, the culture promotes collaboration and trust, but in practice every team seems distrustful of others and works mostly in isolation.
