      Web Product Manager Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at athenahealth (Worcester, MA) in Jul 2023

      Interview

The first round was with a recruiter which went very well and she wanted me to meet with the hiring manager before the recruiter left on vacation. She was able to squeeze me into a 30-minute video interview with the Hiring Manager a couple of days later. I was confident going into this round as my skills matched what they were looking for based on the job post and additional information I received from the recruiter. However, when it came time to meet with the Hiring Manager it became a completely different story. He was late for our call and I do understand meetings running over but he seemed extremely disorganized and distracted. He proceeded to tell me he has to work from home due to his child being sick, his wife not being around, and how he doesn't like telecommuting. He then had me confused with a different candidate and when I clarified I applied online and I was not a referral, he seemed annoyed and disappointed. Next, he wanted me to explain what I think their company does and what the role entails. Since I did my research, I provided my answer based on my findings and the information I received from the recruiter which seemed to annoy him even more to the point he went on a good 10-minute speech on the company and specifics. Of course, the information he provided is invaluable to someone that has never worked there but he did not have to belittle me in the process. The next question I received was my experience working with engineers which I have done for nearly a decade. While I was answering, he began typing on his phone and told me to "hold on a minute" because his wife was checking in on their child. Once he finished responding to his text, I began finishing my answer to his engineer question only to be interrupted by him telling me I did not have them build anything which was absolutely not true. I clarified my experience to which he dismissed and felt the need to further tell me what I did and did not do. With less than 10 minutes left, he finally gave me the chance to tell him about myself and my experience but as soon as I opened my mouth, he interrupted me and said he first wants to tell me (more) about the company. I only had a few minutes left to tell him about myself and my experience which I whipped through due to time running out. I then asked one question to him which pertained to the skills and experience he's looking for in the person working in this role. This was a very bad idea I guess as he decided to give me "feedback" at this point and once again he proceeded to demean my experience, not only lessening what I did with my current employer but also having the audacity to tell me what I did and did not do stating I wasn't any kind of leader there and basically saying I was a pushover. He barely even asked me about my professional experience (instead again he was “telling me” what it was & was not), and then in that little time left, he spent it trying to tear me down. I smiled through my anger and thanked him for his time. Quite frankly, he said I was no leader, but if that's the face of that teams leadership, I can't imagine the morale of anyone working under him. I sent an email later that day to the recruiter letting her know I was withdrawing my application from this position due to his conduct and lack of professionalism towards me.
