I received an email to set up the initial phone screen. This was all simple and clear. The phone screen itself primarily involved the screener talking to me about the company and role, but there were also opportunities to elaborate on my resume and interest in the position. What I found extremely off-putting was the insistence on making me name my salary history and expected salary. MA just passed a law forbidding asking about salary history, which admittedly is not yet in effect, but I still would have expected athenahealth to have updated their HR screen questions pro-actively. When I declined to give an expected salary range without knowing more about the overall compensation package, I could tell the interview was over. If salary is so much more important than learning about my background, the anticipated hiring range should be clearly posted in the job description. I was not even surprised by the utter lack of response to any of my follow-up emails. Ghosting by HR departments seems to be the norm; it is not hard to have a stock email that lets someone know you've decided to go in another direction.
