      Cashier Interview

      Jul 19, 2010
      Anonymous employee
      Mechanicsburg, PA
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Walmart (Mechanicsburg, PA) in Nov 2009

      Interview

After applying on-line, was called for interview with date and time set. When arrived for interview, Personnel employee forgot an interview was scheduled and had gone for the day. An unprofessional female (turned out to be a CSM--customer service manager) first had me answer a general-question test and then asked additional questions. Then a professional-acting male Assistant Manager asked a few more questions. I was offered a job as Cashier at less than the minimum per hour I listed. I accepted because of long-term unemployment and was then sent for drug test before a starting date could be scheduled. I started a few days later with orientation in the Personnel office and computer training, after which was sent up front to put items in bags with experienced cashier for a couple days and then having experienced cashier bag items for me (and answer questions as needed) for a couple more days. After that, CSM available for questions and special procedures. Most other cashiers very nice people...CSMs and management, too. One unprofessional, unhelpful CSM. Liked job better than expected, but very tiring. Was fired after 7 months for excessive tardiness. Proper procedures/process followed leading up to that, but they were really looking to fire people because others were being picked on seemingly unfairly. In fact, the Zone Manager who did my actual firing was apparently later demoted to the lowest job there, but I don't know which job or why. He seemed to me to be doing well when I was there. The trend where I worked was to never let full-time employees get overtime, but to be sure the part-time employees got at least 32 hours of their 34-hour maximum. Also, no full-time cashiers had been hired at that store in "years." Schedules were made 2-4 weeks in advance and it was very difficult to schedule time off for appointments or kids' activities and such. Cashiers (except overnight ones) worked irregular hours, never starting at the same time two days in a row and rarely having the same days off each week, although I did usually have off on Tuesdays. (However, I had kept my availability--times and days of the week--almost completely open in order to get a job!) This job was over 70 miles round trip from where I lived and was not worth the beating my care took. Oh, one-hour lunches are mandatory. Actually had time to eat and rest, but made for even longer days. I was told not to overshare personal information because of the gossip mill, but I didn't notice much gossip while I was there. Of course, since I don't do it maybe I was left out of the loop...

      Interview

Easy to accomplish and not very difficult. Seemed if you used common sense you’ll be okay. Just be yourself and go in there prepared. Good luck! I didn’t get an offer but I was fine with that.
