      Teacher Interview

      Sep 6, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Cooper City, FL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at VIPKid (Cooper City, FL) in Aug 2017

      Interview

I went through a 10 minute demo that I had to prepare for, a 25 minute mock session that I had to prepare several days in advance for and this totaled to about an hour and a half after the entire mock session was done, and I had to prepare for a second mock session that I prepared for several days in advance which also took about an hour and a half for the entire mock sessions in addition to buying a headset that I no longer need.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I was only asked during the demo if I had an ESL certification which I explained where I live is called an endorsement and the gentleman proceeded to ask anyway if I have the certification. All three mentors gave me very different advice and suggestions, which made it hard to please the next because the suggestions were contradictory to what the following mentor wanted to see. Too many props, not enough props. More conversation, less conversation because of time. Watch your time, stop and correct several errors. The only time I got any kind of checklist was after the demo. After the mock 1, which I passed, I was given the feedback but no checklist. After mock 2, which I did not pass, I was also given feedback but no checklist (and the feedback in my opinion was based on the contradictory suggestions, but not lack of knowledge or ability). I have taught for 11 years and I have had ESL students in my class every year. I have a Bachelor's in Elementary k-5 and a Master's in Reading and Literacy. I have always had excellent results in my classroom and it is mind boggling to me as to why my mock 2 was unsuccessful. Not to mention, in the demo, the mentor told me what my hourly rate would be which seems very deceiving. Why would I be told my hourly rate if it's not set in stone, yet? Also, for my demo I did not use a headset and the mentor heard me just fine. For mock 1, the mentor said I needed them but we could proceed with the mock 1, so I went out and bough a headset for mock 2 which I did not pass, so that was a waste of money. In addition, I was told by the last two mentors that they said incorrect words that I did not fix. Such as harm instead of harmed. Clearly, it sounded to me with their attempt at an accent that they said the word correctly, otherwise I would've made the correction. All in all, I spent several hours to prepare for the demo and the two mock sessions and I am highly disappointed at the result. I am fully aware of my abilities in the classroom, in addition to how they are applied with my own children (after all I taught two of my daughters how to read before kindergarten) and I feel like VIPKID needs to get its mentors on the same page. It makes no sense to give a person suggestions when the next mentor is not in agreement. I feel like I wasted many hours for nothing.

A greatly respect your experience, and having so many years teaching experience is wonderful. As online education continues to grow different skills are sometimes needed, and at times, skills honed in the classroom may not translate well to the online platform. We are currently working on streamlining the process to help our future applicants and recruitment team. You are welcome to email us to get more feedback about your interview and demo lesson performance. Our email is teacherappeal@vipkid.com.cn

      Interview

just a quick demo lesson following the course materials, then a few logistical questions and talk about the program. Was quite quick and easy overall if you have teaching experience..

Pretty simple! There was a live and recorded portion where you "teach" a sample class. My interviewer was nice and helpful. Make sure your internet is good and use a wired connection

      Interview

Easy and straight forward interview process. There is a demo teaching section. This was a while ago so it may have changed. The onboarding process was also easy. Again, this was a while ago, so it may have changed.
