      ESL Teacher Interview

      Feb 3, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Beijing, Beijing
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at VIPKid (Beijing, Beijing) in Feb 2017

      Interview

I cancelled my Interview after receiving interview materials and researching online reviews on the company. This is the email that I sent VIPKID recruiting: "After reading reviews online about VIPKID, I had to ask myself WHO would want to work in such an environment. Sure, I love kids and I love education, however I would not pride myself on attempting to teach a lesson based on a poorly produced "PowerPoint slide deck." The sample you provided gives little information on the "teaching demo" portion of the interview. I don't have time to prepare a presentation that is so poorly created and described. "Your automated emails and telephone call are also an indicator that you do not take my application seriously. Once in the interview, you expect a "dog and pony show" that will WOW your socks off. I don't think you pay enough (top $20 per hour) to warrant such preparation and talent. "I am a retired engineer looking to enter education, however more with older students. Your recruitment materials ask for K-12 experience, which I have, yet everything else focuses on much younger children. I am a serious person who doesn't need to scream WAY TO GO with A BIG THUMBS UP to teach authoritatively. Your demonstration video was uncomfortable to watch and I don't see myself acting in such a manner, no matter how much I love kids and education. "There were several reviews online stating that feedback was less than required. Technical difficulties with your portal were also mentioned. Stories of late or no payment for services; $15 wire fee for international wire transfers for payroll deposit -- that is more than you pay for a 30 minute class; monetary deduction if requirements are not met to your satisfaction; unsatisfied parents who interfere all too often; indifferent and disrespectful teacher reviews. I would not tolerate any of this, especially when I must teach online at 3:00 AM. "So, all this considered, I cannot see myself going any further with your recruitment process."
