I interviewed here in person some years ago, soon after completing my MSc. The interviewer was quite patronising. I was asked to describe what work I'd done in AutoCAD previously. I explained that I had modelled a turbulence grid in 3D with grid dimensions and corner radii of curvature that I had calculated to produce a certain turbulent lengthscale. His reply was 'oh, drawing radius of curvature is simple. There's a lot more to it than that'. It was just one of the first computer modelling tasks of my master project and because I used AutoCAD (rather than SolidWorks), I felt I was answering the question satisfactorily and matter-of-factly. I wasn't saying that was the entirety of what I'd need to be able to do. He gave me nowhere to go from here. I came all the way for that interview and was asked 2 questions. What did they expect? I don't even think the majority of what they were designing (pig sheds?) was much more complicated, anyway. But actually he was just rude and dismissive, uninterested, and asked no more questions. Just wrapped up the interview. I got a job in the drawing room of another engineering firm, in nearby Carlisle, a few months later, so I don't think my experience was particularly lacking, despite not having an engineering qualification, and there I was modelling large multi-component machines within a few months. Overall, weird interview and weird atmosphere. I was left with the impression that his attitude had something to do with my gender.
