I applied online last week and received an email asking to schedule an interview. So I did, and scheduled it for 11:15 on 12/01. I arrived 10 minutes early, checked in, and was directed into a dirty room full of chairs and stained carpet. Inside that room were about 50 other people, all waiting for their interviews. I was shocked, but hoped that because I had a scheduled interview that I would be interviewed at my scheduled time.
Boy was I wrong. I waited over an hour for my interview. After my name was called I went into a room where about 6 other one-on-one interviews were taking place. The woman that interviewed seemed very disinterested in interviewing me, and many times during the interview I noticed she wasn't even looking at me but looked at the other interviews. After a few questions she told me that it was indeed a seasonal position (which is what I applied for, so I already knew) and that the position paid $8.00 an hour. Really? $.85 more than minimum wage in New York City? Well, whatever, I could use the paycheck so I said that was fine. She asked me which department I could see myself in, and then told me to go back to the room where I was and that she wanted to have a floor manager interview me. At this point I was also given back the little card that would allow me to retrieve my ID from the security guard at the front HR door.
Slowly people were called for the second interviews -- some that had been waiting before me, and much to my surprise many that had returned to the interview room after me! After two hours, yes TWO HOURS, I decided that if this was the way that Macys treated potential employees then I cannot imagine how they treat the folks that they suckered into the job and walked out. I entered HR at 11:05. I left at 2:00pm.
Absolutely ridiculous. I will never, ever consider working for them again (I'd rather be homeless on the street), nor am I likely to ever shop there again either after such a terrible experience.
