      Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 24, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. I interviewed at Indeed (Austin, TX) in Oct 2018

      Interview

I wouldn't suggest anyone apply because of Indeed's unethical and predatory hiring practices. I had a 30-minute interview at the school and was asked a simple algorithms questions. Then I was invited to the on-site at their headquarters. On the onsite had 3 rounds of whiteboarding where I was asked leetcode style problems and was asked to code it. They ask many follow up questions and also want you to write test cases. The interviewers were really helpful. There were some presentations on the on-site and there is also a coding challenge section. In the coding challenge section you are asked a question on hackerrank and try to write a program passing all of them. There are also written follow up questions about how you can improve your code if you had more time, resources etc. The coding challenge question is insanely hard and I was able to get only half the test cases correct, but still was able to get an offer. If you are smart enough to get all cases correct, you can probably get offers from any company you want. After the interview it took me less than 5 days for me to get my offer and here the negative experience started. On the phone, I was told I had a 2 week deadline and was told to accept as soon as possible because the slots may fill up. I wanted an extension and my recruiter told me she would give it but can't guarantee that there will be an open place. Then I got my offer which had no deadlines on it. One week later I got a mail saying my offer will expire in 1 days. I contacted a recruiter immediately and she responded after one day after saying she was waiting for confirmation. It was really stressful for me. The offer then got resent again. However, this time I got offers from better places so I didn't care about Indeed. In the end, after three weeks after I was given an offer, I was contacted by a recruiter asking if I will accept it or not. So the whole deal with limited slots turned out to be a lie and I felt disrespected. I would encourage anyone who has an offer with them to accept and renege if they are placed in this situation since Indeed clearly doesn't care about honesty.

Only did the 1st round. It was a medium Leetcode question. The interview was only for 30 min. Their compiler threw an unexpected error, which even the interviewers couldn't fix

      Interview

In total, there were five interviews. Three of them were more technical and the other two or more about your background. The technical interviews were pretty standard simple to medium Leetcode questions.

      Question 1

I was asked about how we kept metrics in my previous job. When I told him that this was something we didn’t really do, he continued to harp on this question for the entirety of the interview, as if it was something that would be very difficult for me to learn.
