      Entry Level Hubspotter Interview

      Jul 19, 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Portsmouth, NH
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot (Portsmouth, NH) in Jul 2016

      Interview

I applied online through their website and heard back almost immediately - in their automated email HubSpot tells you something to the effect of "we'll get back to you quickly," and they definitely lived up to that promise throughout the experience. Before I really get into the process, I should start by saying that I set the interview as "difficult" more for the length of the process and many different stages, not the actual interviews themselves. Next was the Take the Interview section where you do an interview online by reading questions and recording them. This was a little awkward and in some ways challenging, but the questions were pretty straightforward. Then came a phone interview. I spoke with a recruiter named Patrick who was very kind and easy to talk to. He called me back 15 minutes after my interview to let me know I would be moving on to the next phase. He also sent me a follow-up email after I set up my subsequent meetings to let me know he would be out of the office the next week but to feel free to contact him with any questions. Next came two back to back google hangout interviews, one being with a product expert to complete some tasks using the software. Both interviews went well despite (ironically) some technical difficulties with my internet connection. I know this because I got a call from another recruiter - this time Holly - who gave me feedback from the interviews which really helped with the process. The final interview involved meeting with several members of the Portsmouth, NH team in person. Each of the interviews went well, there were 3 more serious interviews and also brief check-ins with Holly. The only thing that surprised me was that there was no technical element to these interviews. I knew going into the interview process that my resume didn't contain a lot of relevant technical experience, so in preparation I really spent a lot of time with the software and also taught myself the basics of HTML and CSS because I thought it might come up (and just general curiosity). Ultimately, Holly called me to chat and let me know they went with someone who had more technical experience. As I said, I knew that would probably be an issue for me going in so I can't say I was too shocked, but I was definitely disappointed. I was extra disappointed because I felt I didn't really have a chance to prove that I had dedicated a lot of time building up my technical skills (specifically because I really wanted the job). Nevertheless, I think there were a lot of elements to the interview that the HubSpot team went above and beyond with. Everyone I met with was incredibly kind and easy to talk to, they all seemed really engaged in the process which made me enjoy the process. There were a lot of points in the process that I thought to myself "Wow, I'm surprised so-and-so did/said that, that was very thoughtful." They put such an emphasis on culture in the company and it is nice to see that it really carries over into the interview process. The only thing I wish had been different (aside from not getting the job) is that I would like to have had a chance to demonstrate my technical skills in person having had a bit more time to work with the software. Or perhaps it would benefit HubSpot to make their job description maybe a bit more strict in terms of what they expect regarding technical experience when you apply. Although I come away from it seeing it as a positive interview experience, it's hard to get past the bitter feelings as it was actually quite expensive for me to get to Portsmouth. Perhaps I was closer to getting the job than I think, but it seems like maybe a bit more scrutiny is in order for candidates in the final round given that transportation costs are not covered at all? That's something that didn't feel like it mattered as I prepared for the final interview, but when you don't get the job...suddenly it really, really matters. Ultimately, I still had a positive experience. If the same job opened up again tomorrow, I would be one of the first applicants.

Thank you for your thoughtful review and for interviewing with our team. You provided us with some great feedback and context, and I think your review will be super helpful to other candidates interviewing for a job with our amazing support team. Your comment "ultimately, I still had a positive experience. If the same job opened up again tomorrow, I would be one of the first applicants," made my day--our recruiting team works tirelessly to ensure that candidates have a remarkable experience, and I'm delighted to hear that you felt that even though it didn't pan out in terms of an offer. Most importantly, thank you for the time and energy you put into the process, we're so grateful for your efforts and hope to stay in touch. Sincerely, Katie

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot (Cambridge, MA) in Dec 2019

      Interview

I had a 3-step interview process that consisted of a brief phone call followed by a zoom demo consisting (quick chat and mock customer support call) and finished it off with an on-site 2 hour interview with 3 managers. The whole process was quick and efficient with awesome hiring managers that were very communicative and responsive. I had an awesome experience and would recommend anyone on the job hunt to apply to HubSpot.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at HubSpot (Boston, MA) in Oct 2019

      Interview

They were looking to hire quickly - so the process was expedited. Interviewed late one week, and was interviewing in-person in the middle of the next week. (I am not local, I drove 6+ hours to be there) They had me interview with a few different people. Most of them were very pleasant. (Especially Caroline Ostrander & Lauren DeSoiza. Lauren in particular was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.) One of them, a former Apple Store manager, was not. Ultimately, the day after the in-person interview I was informed via e-mail that I was not offered the job. Disappointing, but not the end of the world. In the e-mail, I was told that they would provide some feedback on my interview performance if I wanted it. I figured that might be useful so I obliged. I e-mailed my HR contact asking for interview feedback. No response. I waited 7 days, and e-mailed him again. He replied this time and apologized, stating that he was very busy and got caught up with some other things. Okay. He gave me a date and time when he would call me back the next day. No call. I e-mailed again. No response. I attempted to call him a few times and left a message. No response. And each time I called, his phone went directly to voicemail, no matter the time of day I was calling. Not entirely sure why they say they offer interview feedback if they are obviously not actually interested in providing it. That and Apple store manager guy really soured me on my experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked a lot about customer service experience naturally. Also had me do a demo exercise with their website. It's been a little while, so I don't remember many specific questions that were asked.

      Interview

Be ware! Things will move along quickly and then all of a sudden come to a halt. They pride themselves on having a great company culture but overlook highly qualified candidates who possess a substantial education and willingness to learn. The process is thought to be great initially when you go through the interviews and they will move you along. If one of the managers doesn't care for your style of answering questions or is intimidated by you, good luck moving on and getting an offer from the last round. Very false facade of what they preach and actually represent.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to write a review and I'm sorry that you felt that your interview experience wasn't consistent throughout. Our goal is to be incredibly thoughtful about the methods by which we evaluate candidates' fit for the role, including considering feedback from a cross-section of interviewers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Any decision made would be inclusive of the entire interview team, and includes a thorough debrief process. Regardless, I want to ensure our team is learning from candidates' experiences and will be sure you take your feedback back to the team. Thanks so much for investing the time to interview with us and best of luck in your next steps. Best, Becky
