      Sales Development Representative (SDR) Interview

      Mar 10, 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Greenhouse Software in Jan 2024

      Interview

Exploitation - After a standard recruiter interview, which covered typical questions about my interest in sales and the company, I was then presented with an 'assignment'. This task involved reaching out to potential prospect for Greenhouse based on its Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). The assessment claimed it would take two hours, but in reality, it demanded much more time for thorough company research since I do not have conventional tools like zoominfo / sales nav / looker / outreach that enables completing such a task in 2 hours . The assignment included: 1. Selecting a company to target and justifying the choice. 2. Identifying and explaining the rationale behind selecting five individuals within that company to target, give their designation. 3. Crafting emails to one of these individuals to schedule a demo. 4. Preparing a response for the scenario where the the response is 'timing isn't right'. Essentially, this assignment mirrored the day-to-day responsibilities of a Sales Development Representative (SDR), providing the company with tailored outreach materials for free. If they extended this task to 20 candidates (job posting had over 200 applicants, it was posted 3 times) at the 'assignment' stage, they gained access to 20 potential accounts with minimal effort on their part. What's even more frustrating is the expectation to complete this task within two days. When I inquired about the status of my application, I received multiple emails from the recruiter citing internal challenges that needed resolution before moving forward. However, to my dismay, the role was eventually filled by an internal candidate. *surprise surprise* For a company like Greenhouse, known for its industry expertise, such a flawed interview process is disappointing. It's understandable that employers have the upper hand in a competitive job market, but this level of exploitation and disregard for candidates' time and effort is unacceptable.

Thank you for your feedback - I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience. We always aim for a transparent and streamlined interview process, and it sounds like we have some room for improvement here. I understand your concern regarding the take-home exercise and want to make sure it’s clear that Greenhouse does not use or repurpose candidate materials outside of the hiring process. That said, your feedback regarding the longer time spent waiting for an update is heard, and we will keep this in mind for future searches to ensure we maintain reasonable levels of transparency going forward. If there’s anything else you’d like to share about your experience, please reach out to michelle.yoshihara@greenhouse.io

      Interview

Horrible experience. Manager had no personality at all, and asked way too many interrogative questions. The questions clearly seemed to be AI/ not organic, and it was obvious that the manager was reading from a script. She moved me to the next round. Then came the part that everyone seems to have issues with. Had to submit an assignment, which took hours and was essentially free labor. My assignment was done very well. I followed up multiple times to ultimately be rejected. All this to say, this role 2-3 steps down from my past experience, with very very pay for this position. I was way overqualified, yet my assignment wasn't good enough? Makes 0 sense at all, and I did free labor essentially. "

      Interview

I applied online via a LinkedIn post. A lot of questions are asked in the application. Maybe 5ish or so. A month after I applied I got an email pretty much saying they are interested in me and they had me do an assignment. Mind you I had not spoken to anyone at this point, not even a recruiter. I do the assignment, and maybe a week or so later I get an email telling me they want me to meet with a hiring manager. I had that interview and the cameras were off. After that I was moved on to next steps where I met with another manager this time the cameras were on. That manager seems maybe burnt out? Just reading off questions. After that I was moved on to next steps where met with another person. She appeared to be rolling with the flow of the interview process and would not stop yawning. After that final interview I spoke with a recruiter. Who asked me about what I thought of the process. The process overall was about a month long. Only to be rejected. I feel like AI has taken over the human approach with this company, something is lacking for sure. Not just that, but they really lean into their “fairness” thing a bit much. When I asked about salary apprently it’s a base flat salary across the board it doesn’t matter if you live in the SF Bay Area in California where coast of living is super high or if you live in the middle of nowhere where Nebraska. Everyone gets paid the same.
