      Engineering Practicum Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Google in Jan 2016

      Interview

A couple weeks after I applied online and notified my college recruiter, I received an email to schedule a 2 hour time block for two consecutive 45-minute Google Hangout interviews. I could pick from C++, C, Python, or Java as my preferred coding language. The first interview was only somewhat technical. I had time at the end to ask a lot of questions about the program. My interviewer was a friendly, easygoing person and a full-time engineer. From the questions, it seemed like the type of students they were looking for were creative problem-solvers who are able to communicate their ideas. The second interview involved coding on a Google Doc with a different engineer at another Google site. The problems were tailored to my knowledge as a freshman and were not different from the list of topics to know sent from the recruiter. The suggestion to read Cracking the Coding Interview was also helpful, but not critical. My interviewer for this one was very patient and gave hints when I got stuck. When there was time to ask questions at the end, I asked about the interviewer's project at Google. I appreciated that the interviews were focused on my interests and career development. For both interviewers, it was obvious that they were passionate about the EP program and providing an educational experience for the interns.

      Interview

I applied for the position online. A recruiter reached out and scheduled two back to back phone interviews. The first one was behavioral and included a code reading portion, and the second one was a technical coding question.

      Interview

Short essay responses included with resume and then 2 back to back 45 minute interviews, both technical questions. Nothing very complicated (certainly not the level you get for the real software engineering internship) but they're still looking for smart people who absolutely know their stuff. It's important to review your computer science courses and understand fundamentals, but don't expect some crazy question from Leetcode to pop up.

Applied online and heard back about two weeks later. There were two technical phone interviews, 45 minutes each. Interviewers were super friendly. The interviews were mostly technical, and the second interviewer asked a few questions about my resume.
