I applied through university. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at ExxonMobil (Houston, TX) in Sep 2014
Interview
There were five interviews to get into the Research and Engineering Company. I've heard some people getting in with fewer, but I was considered for several positions. When I started I realized that the majority of new hires were previously interns - so applying your senior year may be an uphill battle.
My advice is to do your research - the interviewers expect a lot and will ask very penetrating questions. Their goal is to find out if your personality meets the ExxonMobil mold. By that they are looking for career workers who are competitive, hardworking, intelligent and personable. Seemed to me that my personality was more important than my technical experience.
My final interview was on-sight, lasted eight hours and included a 20 minute presentation on my Masters research (did not need a masters for the position).
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Don't remember much - interview was too long ago. They will try to figure out how comfortable you are with moving every 2-3 years and how willing you are to work at Exxon for 10+years. Hint: They want both.
Attended 2 interviews. Was very professional and they were interested to know the candidates background. Ghosted me after final interview. When I had a final follow-up with the HR, they told me “still deciding”, but I received rejection email without proper reason on Sunday, which was very weird. I noticed on the day they were supposed to get back to me, they reposted the job on their career portal and LinkedIn, which was prior to my follow-up. They could have just let me know on the follow-up day itself without wasting my time.
I applied online. I interviewed at ExxonMobil in Feb 2026
Interview
Received interview invitation 2 weeks after the status in my application became 'Application in Progress'. Scheduled the interview the week after. The interview went well, I interviewed with the supervisor and one of his staff. It went on close to one hour which was the allocated time. After the interview my status in the portal remains 'Application in Progress', I sent follow up emails to the recruiter but no reply at all. Essentially I got ghosted and left hanging with the status of 'Application in progress' since Feb 2026.
Update: only now (June 2026) is my application status updated to 'no longer considered'. Recruiter don't have the courtesy for the candidates it seems.
