I came in to interview for this role on 10th September 2019. I took a day's leave from my current position to attend, and had spent the two weeks prior thoroughly preparing 12 situation based answers for the appropriate section of the interview.
The interview process itself was absolutely fine - standard sort of stuff. At the end, to my surprise, they said that there may be a delay in coming back to me as the position was still being signed off. They gave no indication how long this would take.
On 19th September, having heard nothing, I emailed their HR asking if there was any update. I got a reply on 24th September advising that they were still in a "period of governance" and they hope to start hearing back this week.
I telephoned and got further information that all roles were being reviewed, and for this reason they couldn't make a decision on the position until the review is complete. The person on the phone said they expected the review to be completed by the end of the month.
On 3rd October I got a further email thanking me for my patience whilst the role was "paused" and that they were still looking at vacancies to make sure their recruitment was aligned to their long term goals. I would hear back within the next two weeks.
But I didn't hear back, and so on 22nd October I called their HR again. I called in the morning and was promised a callback from the person responsible. No call back was received so I called again after work.
This time I voiced my frustration that I was asked to interview even though the role potentially did not exist, and that I was having to chase them up to establish what was going on. They apologised and promised they would chase this up for me.
I received an email the next day saying they had contacted the Hiring Manager and would be back in contact the second they had an answer.
The following Monday 28th October I got an email providing me with feedback from my interview. It was only when I got to the bottom of this email that I realised it was sent with the assumption I already knew I had not been accepted. I replied explaining this was the first I had heard that I had not got the role, and asked if they had just assumed I knew.
They replied apologising and saying they didn't know that I wasn't aware and they thought I was just asking them for feedback (which I had never requested at any point).
So to conclude - I was asked to come for an interview for a role which may not have existed, had to chase Co-op to find out what was going on, and had to wait 7 weeks for an outcome. And even then, they never actually told me I hadn't got the position, just sent me the feedback.
