      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at CarMax (Laurel, MD) in Jun 2016

      Interview

Apply at home online- Got a call to schedule a quick phone interview. "why do you want to work in sales, have you ever worked in sales, why CarMax?" Get a call to schedule an in person interview Arrive and take a loss prevention survey online. Give information about where you have lived criminal background. Interview with sales manager, interview with general manager, urine test, schedule first day of work. Lots of hypothetical questions about work and selling product experience. A mock sale. Greet an individual show them a car schedule an appointment. They're supposed to send you a link and information to prepare for this. I got none. Ask about it on the phone interview. I was at a disadvantage having not selected a car or gotten the "how to sell" info. Luckily I have owned a lot of cars and chose one quickly and researched it and asked to use it as I was at a disadvantage. Quick research let me know, roughly the trim levels, awards it had won, and a fun fact. Though they told me afterwards that only about 30% of their people have sales or car experience at hiring. It could be school or previous non sales work you describe your conflicts and "sales" type stories with. The questions came off a CARMAX form. They'll be the same everywhere. They offered me the job on the spot. Don't know if they were impressed, or because its so cheap to hire and train salesmen. $12/hour for training which is "1 month". Self paced but with redlines you must meet. 15 cars a month bumps up your pay by 10? 20? bucks per unit and there's another step above that. GM said that just shy of half of his staff was on the higher pay scale. Very pleasant overall. Friendly a nd easy,Took about 4 hours.
