      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Jan 30, 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Camunda in Jan 2024

      Interview

Initially, their recruiter reached me about the position. After that, we scheduled a 30-minute call to talk about the position and why I am looking for work. Their process is a little long and has repeating steps for a company like that. 1. Java coding challenge. In this step, they ask you to write a CLI application that will find a route in a BPMN diagram. This is a nice challenge because it is not expected to bring a perfect solution, parsing BPMN from scratch and writing tests. You just need to provide a code to traverse in a graph. 2. Hack session. This is a live coding interview but they don't ask any leetcode style question. In an iterating way, they expect you to parse a response from Camunda API and filter some data. From their reactions during the interview, it looks like they have a company-preferred way that includes using Java streams to solve this. 3. Hiring manager. In this stage, you talk with your potential manager. You can think of this as a standard cultural fit interview. 4. Whiteboard Session. Initially, this step is described as a system design interview but it turned out to be a live coding without any IDE. They ask you to design something like Camunda with Java classes, methods, fields, and pseudocode. 5. Peer Interview. This is similar to a hiring manager interview but it is done with your possible colleagues. Everyone I talked to and the process was good until the whiteboard session. The engineers that were conducting that session were rude and looked down arrogantly. This surprised me and made me think about how all of these people can work at the same company. I got a no after the whiteboard session. I also think it is possible to merge the hiring manager and peer interview into a single step because at the core they are the same interview. Why they are doing a hack session(1.5 hours) if I am going to write code again at the whiteboard session?

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Camunda in Feb 2026

      Interview

Absolutely the worst interview experience I’ve ever had. This company is a complete joke when it comes to hiring. They drag candidates through exhausting rounds, make them solve complex system-wide problems that take hours of unpaid effort, and then shamelessly reject people saying they’re “moving forward with an internal candidate.” If the role was already fixed for an internal hire, why waste everyone’s time by posting it publicly? The entire process feels fake and dishonest from the beginning. Zero respect for candidates, terrible communication, and a complete lack of professionalism. The recruiters and EMs act arrogant while running one of the most disorganized and frustrating interview processes imaginable. And honestly, after seeing how they operate internally, it’s not surprising their product feels outdated and stuck in the past. The culture clearly reflects in the quality of the company itself. Save yourself the stress and avoid interviewing here unless you enjoy wasting your time and energy for nothing.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We understand how frustrating it is to invest significant time in a process and receive an outcome like this. Internal candidates can sometimes emerge mid-process, and we acknowledge that when this happens, it should be communicated earlier and more transparently. That's a fair criticism and one we're taking seriously. Your feedback will be shared with the team and we apologise for your experience. We wish you the best in your search.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Camunda (Stockholm, Stockholm) in Oct 2025

      Interview

I recently had an interview for a Senior Technical position. While the initial introduction was polite, the overall interview experience did not meet the expected professional standards for this level. The interviewer appeared to be reading directly from a prepared list of questions. When clarification was needed, the questions were repeated verbatim without further explanation, making communication difficult. It also seemed that my responses were being compared word-for-word against written notes rather than being evaluated through a deeper technical understanding or discussion. In my opinion, technical or scenario-based assessments for a senior role should ideally be conducted by a Technical Manager or Lead Engineer—someone who can properly assess a senior candidate’s experience, problem-solving skills, and reasoning beyond scripted answers.
