      Sales Associate Interview

      Dec 21, 2012
      Anonymous employee
      Mountain View, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Best Buy (Mountain View, CA) in Dec 2012

      Interview

It took around 2 weeks for them to contact me. The location I originally applied at had actually passed my application to another, farther location. Anyways, first contact came with a phone call. This was the "phone interview" (which I had no idea was an interview at all), but nothing to worry about. The three questions asked were: -Why Best Buy? -What is your availability? -How many hours per week are you willing to work? She then scheduled me an interview in two days. The second in-person interview occurred inside a little private, back room. I arrived on time and only had to wait about 5 minutes for the interviewer to get me. The interviewer was a Sales Manager. He was kind of stoic, so it was hard to tell what he was thinking during the interview. His questions came straight from an interview question packet, and he took notes in the packet as I answered questions. The questions were: -Describe your previous work/volunteer experiences and what your duties were for each -Descrbie one time when you worked in a team/group effectively -Describe one time when you were working in a group and had a problem, how did you resolve it -Describe one time when you had to work with someone you didn't like, and how did you resolve it -Describe one time when you had to deal with an angry/upset customer and how you handled it -Why Best Buy? -How do you keep up to date with current technology? He then opened up the interview to any questions I had for him. He seemed impressed with some of the answers that I gave, but overall it was hard to read him. At the end, he told me to stick around the store for about 5 minutes, and he would let me know when I could move onto the next interview with the General Manager. In about 5 minutes he got back to me and asked me if I wanted to do the next interview immediately, to which I agreed. The General Manager was a very nice and personable man. He definitely made me more comfortable and less nervous. This interview felt more conversational than the last. It was the interview packet style. The questions were: -Why Best Buy? -What was your major? -How long of a commitment can you make? -What would you do if you caught your friend stealing? **Their policy is zero tolerance, so basically, you have to tell on ANYBODY you catch stealing -How would you sell me a game console? **For this question, I went through the questions I would ask him and suggestions, as if he were a customer. He would then give me answers and actions that the customer would do in response, and would keep moving forward, asking me "so what do you do next?" Basically, by the end of it he emphasized that the end goal is to push/sell accessories, protection plans, extra software, etc., rather than the actual product itself. Make sure you mention that you would suggest accessories and protection plans in this exercise.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

There were a surprising amount of questions about teamwork, which I found myself running out of examples to talk about.

      Interview

It was not too long and was a good process. They asked me about eight questions so that was not bad at all. Just make sure you act professionally and be positive throughout the process is what’s most important of all.

      Interview

Applied for the job online, then immediately got an email to do a video interview within 5 days. There is no interviewer, it's just you responding to the questions on the screen as it records you. It gives you a moment to practice if you want. There are 8 questions. You have 10 seconds to read the question, then 2 minutes to respond. At least you can click the button if you want to continue, giving you time to think or take a breather before you answer the next question.
