      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 16, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Bengaluru
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Autodesk (Bengaluru) in Feb 2012

      Interview

I was called by the HR to setup the interview with the hiring manager. The hiring manager called at the pre-agreed time and he went over my resume, but asked questions mainly on behavioural management, how to resolve a conflict, managing team, etc. The second round was mostly technical in C++; I was asked to code using some online tool, and was asked to critique the code and to fix the errors. I was later presented with some code and to predict the output, if any or the compilation errors if it has any.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

It was mostly on C++ features like casting operators, inheritance, templates. It was easy if you are a bit prepared, but be ready to write the code and you should be fluent in it.

      Interview

Stage 1: Hiring Manager interview My first interview was with Mariella. She was very kind, explained the process clearly, and was very helpful throughout the different stages. Stage 2: Technical assessment The second stage was a technical assessment. The instructions mentioned that it should take around one hour to complete. Stage 3: Technical review After that, I had an interview with Fabrizio, where we reviewed what I had done in the technical assessment. He was very friendly, easy to talk to, and gave off very good vibes. Overall, this part of the process was very positive. Stage 4: System design interview The final stage was the system design interview, and this is where the experience became uncomfortable. The interview was with Chris, and it was the only interview in the process that was not recorded. From the beginning, the atmosphere felt strange—not necessarily hostile, but definitely uncomfortable and not very welcoming. During the interview, there was no positive feedback at any point, and the attitude felt quite apathetic. Overall, it was a poor experience, especially compared to the previous stages. Overall experience: In general, the process was good, especially the first stages with Mariella and Fabrizio. However, the last interview was a negative experience and affected my overall perception of the process.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

The technical challenge was based on designing or implementing a parking lot system. The main focus was on how to manage the parking lot logic, including availability, vehicle handling, and the overall structure of the solution.

      Question 2

The system design exercise was based on designing a platform similar to Booking.com, with a strong focus on how the system connects with multiple hotel APIs. The most important part of the discussion was the integration with those external APIs, including: - How to connect with different hotel providers. - What happens if one or more APIs fail. - How to keep hotel data available and updated. - How to handle the booking process across external systems. - How to recover from failures during the reservation flow. - How to structure the database schema to support the system. The key focus was not only the database design, but especially the reliability and handling of the external hotel API integrations.

      Application

      Interview

My interview opens with a discussion on technical decisions. Instead of just "What is a class?", the interviewer asks: "Why choose C++ over a managed language like Java or Python for your last project?"I focus my answer on predictable performance and fine-grained memory control. I explain that for our low-latency data processor, the overhead of a Garbage Collector (GC) was unacceptable. This leads naturally into a discussion on RAII (Resource Acquisition Is Initialization). I explain that by tying resource lifespan to object lifetime, C++ allows for deterministic cleanup without the need for manual free() calls or a GC.
