I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Airship (AL) in Aug 2021
Interview
1. Automated email with a short personality/culture quiz
2. Email with some pre-interview questions (from HR manager)
3. Fairly standard "Phone screen" interview with HR manager, background/personality questions only
4. Technical interview (mine was with the development lead and one developer from the team I would be on, it was a pair programming session to complete some stories on a repo which was shared with me ahead of time)
5. Team interview, background/personality questions only
6. CEO interview, background/personality questions only
Everyone that I interacted with was exceptionally nice and personable. Really enjoyable interview process.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Airship (AL)
Interview
I was sent a "personality quiz." Honestly, I enjoy taking well thought-out personality quizzes, but this was not one of those. You pick from a list of ~100 words which best describe you and what best describes your work style.
I was called the next day and told, "You're a developer, so you're probably not a great leader or communicator" and they were looking for someone that was more outspoken and "not a traditional dev". I just told them that doesn't describe me at all; I'm seen as a leader for our department, I lead several project teams, and I communicate directly with our clients including CMOs of Fortune 100 companies. After a quite bizarre conversation, I ended the call by telling the recruiter I don't want any part of a company that judges me on which words I pick on a page instead of the result of my work.
They still have recruiters reaching out to me 3 months afterward. I couldn't imagine why they struggle to fill the position.
Thank you for submitting this review. It’s important to us that we always improve in everything we do and the first step to that improvement is knowing where we have failed; we failed here. We failed to properly educate the recruiter you interacted with just how we use results from our personality surveys and the reason such surveys exist as part of our initial hiring process.
I’m sorry your takeaway was that we didn’t see leadership potential in you because you are a developer. That couldn’t be further from how we think of leadership and how we identify leaders at Airship (my co-founder and I are both developers by trade). If you’re up for it, I would love for you to shoot me a message on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/trentkocurek/) to discuss your feedback, how we approach our personality surveys, and to go over your survey results together.
Thank you again,
Trent Kocurek
