How are the career development opportunities at Stripe?

      Stripe reviews

Disappointing experience - would not recommend

      Product specialist
      Former employee
      Bengaluru
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Good compensation and benefits package. Strong brand recognition in the industry.

      Cons

Poor work-life balance, high stress environment, lack of career growth opportunities, management issues, and overall negative company culture.

Good growth opportunities and amazing compensation

      Associate
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

An amazing workplace with great work culture and no hierarchy system. You will find some amazing folks out there.

      Cons

Since it is scaling at a very high speed, sometimes I find the stripe culture is not getting along.

Good compensation but poor WLB and culture

      Software engineer
      Current employee
      Toronto, ON
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Decent compensation and benefits (including dental, eye, mental health, commuter, education, office lunch and snacks, travel insurance) - Opportunity for remote if not close to an office - Very talented coworkers, opportunity to learn a lot of technical skills from watching senior engineers - Very users focused - it is easy to see the positive impacts of the work you are doing with Stripe's customers, and engineers have the opportunity to do user interviews - Lots of opportunities to travel to other offices for inperson team and broader org events. - Generous time off policy, though people still work/are available during their vacation time

      Cons

      - Poor WLB; teammates generally work long hours including on evenings and weekends. Culture of always being available - Poor culture; lack of team cohesion, social/networking opportunities, and mentorship - Poor managers -> not supportive in helping juniors advance their careers and skills. Lack of feedback from managers about how you are doing. - In office policy of about 50% of the days, but teammates are not colocated - Oncall can be heavy; 24/7 on call means that you can get paged at any time and have to work at a moment's notice - Stress and burnout seem to both be common - PIP culture -> PIPs and firings are common for perceived low performance - Office politics include backstabbing and making others look bad - Culture of very fast pace results in overload, burnout, cutting corners on projects (hence leading to more trouble down the line) and lack of attention to observability or code maintenance - Relating to previous point, many simple tasks at Stripe take too long to do because of the convoluted and tangled up codebase, particularly the FE codebase

      Unfriendly to underrepresented minorities

      Senior software engineer
      Former employee
      New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Good compensation Good resume option Friendly coworkers

      Cons

Does not care about DEI Poor work/life balance Difficult to get promoted or explore other career opportunities internally Hostile to more progressive views

      1

Great learning experience with strong culture and support

      Risk analyst
      Current employee
      New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Collaborative and supportive team environment Exposure to complex, real-world risk management scenarios Excellent compensation and benefits package Strong company mission and innovative culture Great opportunities for learning and career development

      Cons

Fast-paced environment can sometimes feel overwhelming High performance expectations and workload intensity Limited visibility on some internal decisions for frontline teams Processes can be rigid at times Occasional communication gaps between global teams

Supportive Culture and Good Perks, But Narrowed SDR Role and Limited Career Growth

      Sales development representative (sdr)
      Former employee
      Chicago, IL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

-Friendly and supportive people -Positive work culture -Attractive perks -Well-maintained office with a welcoming staff -Attainable goals (though frequently and dramatically changing) -Opportunity to engage in interesting projects if you show initiative -Leading-edge product -Compensation is generally good for the role, despite changes over the years Note: The Chicago office, which primarily consists of sales personnel, has a distinct culture compared to other locations. It is small (around 150 people) and more intimate, with a focus on genuine connections rather than a traditional "salesy" environment.

      Cons

-SDR role is now more narrowly focused on high-volume outbound efforts and large campaigns, with less strategic outreach -Limited executive and managerial presence in the Chicago office -Limited career advancement opportunities -Unclear promotion cycles and role availability -IPO seems perpetually imminent -Small office with limited desk space; no assigned desks unless you are in the office five days a week -Varied office cultures across locations -Stripe’s complex ecosystem (with multiple products and use cases) requires significant ramp-up time; staying updated is challenging

      Pros

Challenging and interesting work. Great co-workers. Clear impact on end users. Great culture

      Cons

Up-level opportunities are few. Middle management can be very clueless about systems they oversee. Primarily interested in managing up than managing down.
