Do employees at Meijer receive pay raises?

      Meijer reviews

      Most days are good

      Service coordinator
      Current employee
      Kent, OH
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

I like my co-workers, I've received two pay raises in my first 8 months, "extra" things they do (team member appreciation week, food in break room on holidays), non leadership is union, any overtime is paid daily

      Cons

Often short staffed - not always due to bad scheduling, but call offs. Rarely are attempts are made to find someone to fill in, we're just expected to run short. It gets stressful when there are breaks and lunches that need covered. Also, rude customers are a con, but unfortunately you find that in all customer service positions. It's part of a union (yes, this is a pro & a con), training isn't the best

      Okay on the surface

      General merchandise team member

      Business outlook

      Pros

I had the opportunity to join Meijer when a lot of their values aligned with Fred Meijer as it had just recently been ran by a member of the Meijer family. Through this, I developed great relations with my coworkers. This became my primary reason to stay at Meijer. Meijer has also made efforts to be more inclusive, which I think on the surface is good.

      Cons

Over the course of 5 years, Meijer has gradually been lessening hours. There used to be one person per department, now we are lucky to have 3 people scheduled inside to cover the entirety of General Merchandise. This persisted through busier seasons, and many times there would only be one person to assist customers on the floor. The Union is helpful in some aspects, but negotiations fall short of representing the floor workers. The most recent arrangement provided an increase in the starting pay, but reset everyone's hours that contribute to their next raise. As a part timer who was a full time college student, I was not working many hours but was almost to my raise (940 of 1,000 hours). This reset put me back to where now I would have to work 1700 hours in order to get another raise, but I likely will not be around long enough to see this. Overall, I have made $4 from when I initially started in June 2018, but the amount of work I have had to pick up during this time does not reflect the pay whatsoever. Meijer has been stretching its employees thin and no longer offers a welcoming environment. I miss feeling valued, and now feel no more than a cog in a machine. Referring back to Meijer's inclusivity, their strive for diversity is possibly good, but also seems like a front in order to seem appealing. They pledge sustainability, but many of the brands they order from have products wrapped in needless plastic, resulting in Meijer contributing greatly to waste and pollution.

      Easy work, no communication

      Food clerk
      Current employee
      Lake Orion, MI
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

The work is easy. Not much thought is required. There's a pay raise every 700 hours.

      Cons

Coworkers make the job harder by calling off or purposely working poorly. Management doesn't communicate. There's no prioritization. Management has too high of expectations which are nearly impossible to meet.

Okay pay and friendly coworkers, but exhausting demands

      Overnight grocery clerk
      Current employee
      Whitestown, IN
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Okay pay and benefits, friendly coworkers, decent advancement opportunities, automatic raises and occasional bonuses, employee suggestions are occasionally implemented

      Cons

Heavy physical workload paired with unreasonable expectations, no "slow" days or downtime leads to exhaustion over time, mandatory overtime (good opportunity but should be optional), sanitation practices and available supplies need improvement, some managers work hard while others slack off, some coworkers don't adequately bathe (observable through olfactory senses)

      great place to work

      Business outlook

      Pros

Good benefits, lots of opportunities for growth, close-knit (sometimes too close) work group

      Warehouse coordinator
      Current employee

      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Good benefits, plenty of growth opportunities, good starting pay with raises and bonuses (based off of production), involved leadership, flexible schedules

      Cons

Long hours in cold temps (depending on area of warehouse), work culture can be cliquey

      It's fine

      Certified pharmacy technician
      Current employee
      Lansing, MI
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Relativly easy to get hired, in the begining pay increases are easy to get by getting liscensed and additional certifications.

      Cons

Pays a lot less than competitiors, once you've been there a few years the pay begins to max out/ increases are less.

      Ok but not great

      Deli clerk
      Former employee
      Lexington-Fayette, KY
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

It's a union shop Paid vacation

      Cons

All responsibilities got dumped on our department from watching and cleaning up other departments to running a checkout lane with no thank you or increase in pay. Everyone was burnt out and turnover was high.

      Mixed Feelings

      Frozen/dairy associate
      Former employee
      Aurora, IL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Managers were nice most of the time and very understanding that everyone is human too.

      Cons

They will over work you and not give you a proper raise. There is no room for career growth unless you are favorited by certain managers.
