Pros

I've worked for civil firms at both ends of the spectrum - small, family-run businesses, and multi-discipline, 100+ engineer firms. Both had their pro's and con's, but I've found Wilson to be the perfect mix of each. Like the bigger companies, Wilson has a ton of resources for engineers, from the latest CAD and modeling software and in-house survey, to over 60 years in business. But like a smaller company, I get to interact with the principals on a daily basis and have learned so much from their wealth of experience as a result, whereas at the bigger firms I've worked at, there was considerably less interaction or sharing of knowledge.

Cons

This is really not a big deal, but if I had to list a con - as a project engineer typically working under several project managers on various projects, sometimes it can be tough to know how to prioritize my tasks for the various projects, and allocate my time appropriately. At firms I've worked for in the past, lower level staff have more-or-less had their tasks for each week dictated after the PM group has coordinated their various project deadlines and staff needs. Wilson recently rolled out a new system to address this, and it seems to be working well so far to identify schedule conflicts, etc.

Pros

* It's a small company. You know everyone and you do everything. * I get to work on multiple projects making the work a lot more interesting than one long drawn-out project. * I am allowed to explore new innovative workflow and products when time allows. I've been able to bring in some previous experience and it was highly valued. * I know our clients and I see them around town. I also recreate in the areas we work. I was mountain biking and from a vista, I could see my worksite. * Much more competitive pay and benefits than at a large firm. * Work-life balance is highly valued. When there is a chance for overtime we get paid for it or can bank it as PTO and use it later. People take their vacation and doing so is encouraged to prevent burnout. * No useless meetings. * Bellingham is a paradise for almost anyone. The variety of activities is endless. Access to major cities or desolate wilderness is only an hour away.

Cons

* The small company can make it a little more difficult to find a subject matter expert if something novel is encountered. * Housing whether it is to rent or to buy is very competitive.
