Pros

Colleagues are good. Partner organizations are great!

Cons

Strapped with capacity. Slow but sinking ship. Unwilling to adapt to change/ new ideas. Information is kept at the executive level. Little to no room for growth. Very old school!

Pros

-You can travel to interesting places. -You meet some really wonderful activists from around the country and the world. -Lots of "lower" staff members are friendly and fun to be around. -A good chance to understand and engage with the issues surrounding the work and mission.

Cons

-The leadership in this place (especially on the Programs side) is like the movie Mean Girls. It's all about preferential treatment, favoritism, and closed-door conversations and decisions. Lots of bullying. No HR dept. to speak of. -Very clear (but unspoken) racism from upper management, as well as lack of respect for younger employees. -People get hired and fired in the place out of the blue and it's demoralizing to the staff. -Lack of equity in terms of benefits. Some people could work from home when they liked, and others did not have this flexibility (even those who need it more). -Too much time planning, too little time implementing. -Senior management disregards deadlines often and demand your flexibility. However, they have the "right" to do whatever they want. They can be 3 hours late to a meeting or reschedule it a fifth time. Your time is not important to them.

Good ideas other than that not much.

Cons

The current ED needs to reasses her self and get more training regarding racism and sensitivity, her privileged upbringing shows by her constant disregard for others.

I am unhappy to hear that you had experienced what felt like disregard from our Executive Director, as it is our policy, and hers, to always treat all employees with respect and dignity. If you have any specific concerns please reach out to me directly at why@whyhunger.org. While we acknowledge your point of view, we strongly support our Executive Director and have no history of similar concerns from staff or partners of the organization. WhyHunger has been engaged in a multi-year process to deepen our practices and policies around racial equity. Led by a rotating cohort of staff at all levels of the organization, this process is heavily supported by our Executive Director (and she is an active participant) and includes: racial justice education and self-reflection, skill building, examining power and privilege within our organization, reworking policies and practices to be explicitly anti-racist and shifting our organization culture.
