Pros
- If you only need it for teaching experience, it's an okay job because any experience is good experience for teaching. - My region manager was very nice
Cons
- Even though you can choose your own hours, if you're working full time and the kid is in school, that limits days available. And if you're taking on a few kids (which you'll need in order to make a worthy profit), that limits availability as well. - I spend anywhere from 1-2 hours per kid every week planning a lesson for them. On average, I probably spend 5+ hours prepping a good lesson for all kids each week. This is all UNPAID, let alone the session reports you have to write after each session -- also unpaid. - You drive only where you're comfortable with, but most of my kids are 20 minutes away. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem for a job but I drive there for 20 minutes, tutor for an hour, then drive home for 20 minutes. So I'm driving for 40 minutes, to only stay for an hour. That's not worth it at all. - Some of these kids I deal with DO NOT need a tutor in my opinion. They already have 85% or over; they just want a 90%. So unless you had 90% or over in the subject you are tutoring, I highly doubt you can help that much. Sometimes it's just the student putting the pressure on themselves, sometimes it's the parents. That also sucks too because if the kid isn't working on anything, the parent still wants you to come. And that's where the hours of unpaid lesson plans come in, just so you have something to do each session. - Not worth it if you just want it for a bit of extra money. Unless you work your butt off, this will not bring in much money for you. I'm working my butt off and only making about $300 extra dollars a month. With all of the prep time, I should easily be making double that. You're better off getting another part time job at minimum wage where you can go to work and come home, without doing extra work. $20 seems great at first, but it's really not for all of the work you have to do. Taking some work home for a full-time job is understandable. Working extra hours on your weekend and before and after sessions for a part time job -- NOT worth it. - Working with tutor doctor, I've made SO many sacrifices. No family gatherings almost in the past 6 months, no working out, no spending time with my family & friends, no time to study for the 1 class I'm taking, I've even prepped for tutoring at my day job, ALL because of tutoring. This job is not worth $20 part time.
