    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Toolstation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

hard work, effort and having a positive attitude is definitely noticed, and gets rewarded, at all levels of staff. You get out what you put in. loads of people there have worked their way up, all the top managers were once part time retail assistants, always fantastic progression opportunities on offer.
stable secure company which is growing very fast.
good development plans for every staff which is good
if you have a good idea it gets listened too and sometimes they use your ideas

    Cons

    minimum wage for retail assistants
store can be cold in winter even with heating on
regional manager can put high pressure on store sometimes

    Advice to Management

focus a bit more on staff not all about processes or procedures

I worked at Toolstation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Staff discount. Some reasonable customer.

    Cons

Long hours with no breaks due to staff shortage. Work like dogs to keep the shop going. No support fro middle mangers or directors.
Stupid targets set by people that have never worked in a shop. Low low wages and expected to work in hot stuffy warehouse all summer and cold unheated warehouse all winter.

    Advice to Management

Don’t talk about making it a grate place to work just get on and do it before all your staff leave for better jobs.

    Pros

    Customers, some colleagues, staff discount

    Cons

No breaks even though you get that deducted from wages.

    Advice to Management

Stop covering up the lies that are told and going against your own procedures.

I have been working at Toolstation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Supportive area management always at the end of the phone. Staff moral is clearly a top priority at toolstation and progression does not seem to be an issue with this rapidly expanding company.

    Cons

Product knowledge is a challenge and can be slow going. It's easy to get left behind without regular chats to most customers as your learning base. Toolstation dont directly offer help or guidance with this.

    Advice to Management

A basic handy guide for the staff area on some basic trade knowledge wouldnt be a bad thing. It would show support and understanding.

I have been working at Toolstation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Not unemployed. It's a job
    Free Tea and Coffee
    Decent customers

    Cons

    Not interested in people whatsoever.
Deduct time from you for breaks you can't take due to lack of staff.
Expect you deliver amazing results but do not give the resources required.

    Advice to Management

As dozens of other reviews say.....Have a reality check. You demand more and more yet give stores less and less. It's all well and good doing a colleague survey but the majority of people believe it falls on deaf ears.

I have been working at Toolstation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The pittance of a wage at the end of the month.
    Being in work.
Leaving at the end of the shift.

    Cons

Not enough staff or hours to cover unpaid breaks.
    No extra cover for holidays.
Constantly adding jobs to the workload, but giving nothing extra in return.
Although minimum wage is rising managers do not receive a rise in line so the general store staff are catching up.
After being taken advantage of and expected to cover last minute shifts the store moral is at rock bottom making it difficult to cover shifts.
Upper management do not appear to give a damn even though the company is pushing its 'great place to work' idea. So far this has been talked about for around a year and we are yet to see them live up to any of the promised changes.

    Advice to Management

Look after your staff, pay them a decent wage for the amount of pressure and stress you put on them. They will appreciate it and will look after your stores!

I have been working at Toolstation (More than a year)

    Pros

If you’re lucky you find a good team of people to get on with. If not, then I can’t think of any pros.

    Cons

Mixed messages from management, supervisors and key holders. Rotas constantly changing with only a day or two notice. I’ve had my shifts changed without being told then had to have a ‘one to one’ about why I missed said shift! Expected to start work as soon as you’re in the store. Constantly changing and adding to store/business goals. Having to ask customers to leave a review is the absolute worst. I do delivery, till work, help train up new staff, cleaning the toilet, sweep and mop the entire shop for £7.50 an hour. It’s absurd. I am expected to know about all the products we sell. I would seriously warn anyone before submitting an application.

    Advice to Management

People will be happier to do all the tasks that the role entails if you paid them more.
