Disingenuous Organization

Pros

Lovely office, great catered lunches. Not much else to say as I didn't actually end up working there. There seem to be some decent folks in the organization, but your mileage may vary.

Cons

I quit my previous job and accepted Scopely's offer. Was within days of relocating to Los Angeles when they pulled the plug, leaving me without a means to support my family. Do not trust them. They will woo like like you've never seen before, throw a very enticing offer your way, and then suddenly drop you like a bad habit. In my case, there were some minor complications with the relocation, but they had been made aware of these issues months prior, and there would have been zero problem with me starting work.

Pros

I appreciate Scopely's foundation as a startup who really valued the culture of the creators of the games. I really believe that Javier has a lot to do with Scopely's product success. For the first time in my career I hear people coming out of meetings with the CEO and I hear that they are requesting positive changes to the team and the product. Walter genuinely seems to care about everyone enjoying their time there.

Cons

Things have changed a lot since the success of Monopoly Go!. A lot of VPs and SVPs from Zynga, EA, Riot, Bungie, etc have latched onto the payday at the company and it's impossible to do your job even as a senior level individual contributor without engaging in Game of Thrones level politics. You need to elbow your way through everyone to carve out a place for yourself and prove your value or they'll drop you. With their massive growth since 2020, the company had to get really good at recruiting. They will do whatever they can to convince you to join. Roll out the red carpet and pay BIG money to have you leave what you are doing behind to join them. Unfortunately, they did not put that kind of effort into being good at retaining their employees or hiring managers that can help with the growth of the talent they've acquired. A big reason most people who were here before Monopoly Go are still here are because of the money they can make here. The secret is to keep your head down and do just enough to get by the review period so you can keep getting the Scopely Incentive Units which take 3 years to fully vest. Product outlook is really bad right now. Unlikely that any of these products in development will hit like Monopoly Go did, but they are expecting them all to and spending (er wasting) a lot of money because some SVP told them that if they spent that money they could make a billion dollars. The company slate is being run by people who ran failed products and slates at several other companies and failed their way into this position by playing the game. Really sad to see the state of the company right now.

Good pay, but stressful and toxic alpha male culture at the top

Pros

Compensation and benefits are good.

Cons

Cut-throat culture that is highly political. Clicky, aggressive environment that shows zero empathy from the top.
