Great Resume + Skill Building Opportunity

Pros

It's a great job to have if it's your first or second job out of school. You'll get the opportunity to work for big name clients with the flexibility to work several projects over the course of a few years at a time. You'll hone your skills to the point that you can get a great job anywhere. I learned more in the first 2-3 years at this company than I did in the years at my previous company. Also, the company is kept at a small size, so you'll really get to know everyone very well if you stay long enough. Great health benefits + 401k and the CEO is a great guy who cares about his employees and is mindful of maintaining a positive work environment.

Cons

This is not the kind of company you want to stay forever at. Everyone needs to leave the nest eventually. Grow and fly off when it is your time and let others have a shot at the opportunities you had. Inconsistent rule enforcement - some employees are allowed more leeway than others. It created resentment and perception of favoritism. Due to the lack of organizational structure\office\rank, you will not gain any kind of seniority regardless of how many years you've been there unless you do business development but that itself is difficult since the CEO and his partner control what projects are taken on and what you work on.

Pros

+ The company culture is great; we have annual retreats, company outings, a pool table, an arcade machine, company lunch, etc. The people I work with all take interest in what they're working on and helping the team do well. + The CEO, DongSoo, is the hardest worker in the office and a genuinely good guy. He seems to pursue well-thought-out, intimate client engagements that focus on building relationships that leave both the client and Raybeam engineers in a better place than when the project began. + The projects tend to be short (up to several year) engagements, allowing Raybeam engineers to start from scratch with new technologies every so often. Both East and West coast project managers (Wes and DongSoo) are very responsive when an engineer is unhappy with their current workload/project. + Raybeam Engineers are Consultants, meaning we work directly with clients to gather requirements, build expectations, and deliver on those expectations. That gives us a lot of agency in what we do, and a lot of exposure to different companies, work styles, and people. + While the company structure is flat, Raybeam has been extremely generous with year end bonuses and raises to keep up with employee experience.

Cons

- Because it's consulting, it's dynamic work. Potential applicants should consider that they'll be put in front of clients with changing requirements and have to manage those expectations. The project managers would never throw someone off the deep end, but after a few months expect to be able to face a client. - For people looking to advance up a corporate ladder, there isn't one here. You will, however, gain exposure with clients at high profile tech companies.

Excellent Experience

Pros

Top-notch clients (Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Disney, eBay, etc). Varied projects with many opportunities for expanding your skills and responsibilities. Unparalleled experience, skill-building, and resume-building for a junior developer. The owner/East Coast lead is one of the friendliest and high-quality people you will ever meet. The lead manager on the West Coast can be abrasive at times, but he is just trying to Get Things Done and is a good guy when you get to know him. Great benefits: full medical, good 401k, Flextime, etc.

Cons

Sometimes you may be left without much guidance on a project, requiring you to take responsibility and move things forward yourself. (This can be a good thing or a bad thing.) Not much mentoring or organizational structure and purpose. Not as much opportunity or salary for more senior people.
