Pros

- Friendly, motivated and hard-working people - Fast-growing - Pay is alright, depending on department (try to negotiate for stock options if you can) - Work in some departments ain't bad (branded content is solid, editorial can be fulfilling depending on the management, originals is solid, art team though is run like a dictatorship, and definitely not the benevolent kind - stay the hell away from there) - Office is decent (though a bit cramped) and in a great part of town

Cons

- Poor, inexperienced middle and senior management - Very rigid, vertical organization - Long hours bolstered by artificial deadlines and unrealistic goals - Low-quality editorial work that favors quantity over quality and low journalistic integrity - Low morale: Burnout is a very, very real problem - Limited opportunities for career growth - Non-existent HR

Pros

You'll meet some good, talented people, who'll become long lasting friends. But your friends won't outweigh the misery that you'll endure professionally.

Cons

Management is awful - across the board. There's no balance between micromanagers, who keep you at work until 11pm every night to managers who don't care at all about you as an employee and only care about their personal gain. There's a blurred line between business and personal relationships and managers will often side with their friends. Pay is super low and opportunity for advancement is slim to none. They'd rather higher above you then help you grow.

Pros

Diverse workplace full of smart young people, its large social audience means that celebs and high profile people will work with them, fun office with parties and beer on tap

Cons

The company is fundamentally directionless. It doesn't know if it wants to be a news organization or a content studio. There's the financial pressures, which went from bad to worse because of covid...which means people get moved from project to project for the sake of keeping them employed. This is admirable but it kills off opportunities for growth. And then there's the lack of editorial direction. Midlevel and senior management are cliquey and complacent and more consumed with talking about the news than making news. A lot of conversations about diversity and social justice (while undoubtedly important) come at the expense of figuring out what NowThis can do as an organization to break through and raise its profile.
