Pros

Good people and management, interesting clients. The CEO is very personable, easy to talk to and really seems to care about the employees. I know your schedule is really full most of the time, but my advice is to get more involved in knowing the pain points of employees and development decisions.

Cons

Though they are making great progress with acknowledging and changing processes and procedures for the greater good, I am still surprised that a company of 20 years is not bigger and has more business than they do. In my opinion, and I think/hope you know this, your office location is the problem. If you want to expand and get more talent, you "have" to open a office in London or abroad. Do consider moving into more software areas. They don't pay very well, but this is most probably due to the outside of London location. You have or had a graduate programme, take care of them and nurture them to success, pair them up with a senior or mid-level employee to get them up to speed quickly, don't just give them a manual or tell them to do online courses. You have to mentor them and guide them. Everyone has to start somewhere. You get the impression that finances are really tight, though I don't think that is the case, loosen up a little, no I'm not saying you should throw money away, but it doesn't give employees a good picture.

Pros

Friendly atmosphere. Excellent Sales, Project Management and Account Manager teams. Agile environment. The Design and Development departments are very good at delivering high quality products.

Cons

Lacking in overall strategic focus and enablement seems to hold back the company from. Customer support teams are friendly but lack inspiration from middle management, resulting in a lack of proactiveness. Career progression is limited with very little scope for movement within the company. You'll go far if you play golf or like to cycle (as do the directors). Very slow to research and implement new technologies, or implement new working practises. Its customer base is varied but limited. Slow in the uptake of new technologies. The company profits on the extra work staff undertake in order to bring projects to fruition, who remunerating the staff for their additional commitment. Incorrect staffing levels frequently creates stress due to lack of resources in some departments. Promises of profit sharing have been slow to be formalised. The company needs to divest and seek additional and varying sizes of customers in order to ensure a smoother revenue streams and diversity. Technical middle management adhere to fear blame culture.
