Pros

It’s a job in Bozeman. If you want to be in Bozeman then there are not a ton of career options so you have to be happy for the income.

Cons

This is no longer that innovative, exciting, positive energetic “start up company” that it used to be. There has been A LOT of exceptionally talented people who have left in the last 2 years and a lot of talented people that were laid off.. Not sure where this company is headed....but for me it was no longer a tolerable or stable work environment and it was a relief when I left. At Montana Instruments, I witnessed, racism towards the Asian culture, feeling of pressure around not being a conservative, and certainly some sexism towards the very few women that work there. There was more than a few lay offs, cuts to team pay which was a nice chunk of my income, constant pressure and concerns about the finances, and a new negative executive team that was intolerable. The fellow employees I had were really great people to work with but it has turned into a “keep your head down” and protect your job kind of environment. From what I’ve heard they can no longer even afford to provide coffee for the employees.... not sure what that means but I always loved the good coffee we had there!

We are sorry to hear that this was your experience while working at MI. We will do our best to ensure those behaviors and racism you mentioned do not exist at Montana Instruments. We do pride ourselves on following our values and we will continue to work harder and better at living those out. I am happy to say that we have not cut the coffee and continue to support our local coffee shops. Thank you for being willing to share your feedback with us.

Pros

Do not work here. This company treats employees like trash. It's a toxic boy's club that treats the few women employees like they are inferior. Terrible experience.

Cons

Outdated hierarchy, no compassion, right-wing & judgemental.

Pros

The past couple years have been full of change, process improvement , and new faces but I am excited about the direction and future of this company. Although change is always difficult, the changes being made here have been for the better and are producing a healthy, profitable company. The culture was difficult to maintain with Covid preventing team activities but in recent months this has taken a turn for the best. MI Olympics, Fix Up Festival, and team celebrations have been a great way to bring people together aside from work and contributed to a reinvigoration of the company culture. The engineering team is filled with talented and friendly people who I enjoy working with everyday. With fast paced, challenging projects there is seldom a day where I find myself bored or unengaged in my work. There are high expectations for employees but this positive pressure pushes the team to perform and deliver.

Cons

Living in Bozeman presents challenges with expensive housing and a high cost of living (however, being a 15-20 minute drive from the ski mountain is tough to beat). With that in mind, salary is an obvious area where improvements can always be made. If you are looking for a comfortable, slow paced environment this place is likely not for you. The high standards of the company do require optimum focus and effort to meet expectations.
