Pros

It’s no secret that companies in the tech industry offer convenient high-quality meals as employee perks. Modiface is no exception. During my time here, we had a dedicated office refrigerator that is restocked with groceries once in a while, based on the same person’s preferences. We also got Subway or Pizza once a month as a complimentary meal for our hard work. In terms of celebrations and company offsites, we had an intimate Christmas party and a boat trip in Lake Ontario once a year. We also had new laptops and great tech mentors (who have incidentally since left the company).

Cons

As a technology company, Modiface employees receive flexible hours of 10AM to 5PM with monitoring of when you clock in and out. There is also generally no work from home allowed unless you are sick. Modiface is structured into 2 main groups: client managers and developers. Modiface tends to give big fancy titles to individuals who didn’t even live up to the responsibilities of the title – this goes for both gruops in the company. The client managers are neither professional product managers OR project managers. They were mostly comprised of individuals with little to no qualifications and prior work experience. As client managers, they were SUPPOSED to be acting as the liaison between the clients (L'Oreal brand managers) and the Modiface development team. However, the client managers FAILED at their job since they did not ever consult the dev team regarding project timeline estimations, and frequently promised the clients impossible timelines. This resulted in unnecessary stress for the developers that were IGNORED by management. As part of the dev team, whenever I advised the client managers that the proposed timelines were not achievable, my suggestions were quickly shut down and frowned upon. Further, the management team often shielded their client emails away from the dev team and only included us until AFTER everything was finalized. Honestly, with the recent acquisition by L’Oreal, the international conglomerate will soon realize that these client managers are an unnecessary layer of disruption and overhead.

Intern sweatshop

Pros

Friendly coworkers Good location Macbooks provided Free snacks

Cons

Majority of development is done by interns - at one point the number of interns outnumbered full time engineers four-fold. This was likely done by management to cut down development costs. As a result, quality of the codebase is just terrible. Even senior engineers (who are given title such as VP) had minimal experience so this just added fuel to the fire.

Pros

- lots of opportunities to explore new tech (ML, AR) - new office - smart, nice, collaborative engineering team

Cons

- worst management ever, putting the wrong people at the wrong position - client managements (sales staff) reluctant to learn tech, lack the most basic tech knowledge, and like to boss people around - fixed schedule, can not work from home, bad office politics
