Pros

Direct service staff are amazing, empathetic, and talented, and they work hard to meet the needs of clients.

Cons

Poor leadership starting with the CEO and continuing with the entire “leadership” team. Most fall in line with CEO and fail to stand up for their employees/clients. Unfair compensation - be prepared to be on call 24/7 for client emergencies with no compensation. An on call policy has been promised for 1.5 years with no action from the leadership team to date. CEO does not understand the day to day needs of staff or client families and does not listen to or take action regarding the needs of front line staff. CEO mounted an egregious union busting campaign after staff requested union representation. 5 employees were fired, refugee resettlement team was decimated, and working conditions changed to force staff out. Very vindictive and retaliatory, and client families suffered as a result. Constant turnover has been an issue for years. Many people leave after only a few months, and the average tenure of an employee is oftentimes less than 1 year (many lasting 3-6 months). Lack of transparency around budgets and funding. Working conditions and benefits are not equitable between different types of staff - Direct service employees are not always able to take advantage of employee perks because of the intense workload. Lack of support from the Board of Directors.

Pros

You will certainly have the opportunity to help others. In general, other staff members (who likely will only last there a year) are wonderful, smart, and caring. You can learn a lot in a short period by figuring it out on your own and working through your lunch break.

Cons

The organization has incredibly high turnover. Work-life balance is non-existent, depending on your position. For this type of non-profit, benefits and salary are decent (well, the salary for some positions actually decreased in the year since I've worked there!?). But, then, you should wonder why they are constantly hiring...? It is kind of a start-up mentality framed as a nonprofit, but with a dictator personality running the show. Hello Neighbor is currently under investigation by the NLRB for illegal labor practices when staff expressed their legal right to organize a union (these are public records easily found on Google). This means they as a nonprofit are spending money on legal counsel for their illegal actions, money that could instead be supporting the immigrants and refugees they profess to care so much about. More egregious, due to their union busting, refugees who had just arrived to Pittsburgh and had few connections were left high and dry when staff were fired. Again, it shows that leadership do not care about those they serve.

Pros

If you are lucky enough to have a director who is not under the control of the emotionally ill CEO, you may be okay. This could change at any time, as the CEO picks and chooses certain areas to obsess over in an OCD-level, calculating manner in which she takes pleasure in putting people down and gaslighting them. Shame on the higher level managers who participate in this with her, although to have a positive experience at Hello Neighbor there isn't much of a choice. Overall, the workers are dedicated to the mission. It's an amazing and necessary cause.

Cons

A book could be written about the extreme level of unethical nonsense performed by this org for the purpose of serving the founder and CEO. From the way funds are used to the employee burnout, micromanagement, and lack of services received by clients due to the CEO's unrealistic expectations, there is almost nothing good to be said. The salaries are abysmal and the emotional manipulation and bullying taking place here is through the roof. RUN don't walk away from this organization before it's too late.
