I have been working at Halton Region full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Salary (decent but not great), benefits (adequate) , close to home, OMERS Pension Plan, 35-hr work week. That's about it.

    Cons

The work environment is absolutely toxic. Every department and individual sections within departments seem to be looking out for themselves instead of working together and doing what is best for the organization. Leadership and long term visioning are pretty much non existent. It's all about putting out the latest 'fire' (often caused due to lack of foresight and long term visioning). There is no clear delineation... of staff roles based on expertise which results in a free-for-all of poor quality work. Exceptional performers and subject area experts are ignored and a lot of unqualified staff are assigned key projects instead. This place is full of ego maniacs, bullying, nepotism and empire building as all the other reviews state.

    Advice to Management

Read all the reviews on this site and wake up to the reality that Halton is a poorly run organization. Management's role is to manage, inspire and lead their staff...so start doing that or hire talented people and actually trust them to do the job they have been hired to do.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Halton Region part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Hourly wage, only a few decent people working there. (Watch out for backstabbers and staff out to throw you under the bus for any little thing. Bunch of nasty women working there)

    Cons

No gratitude towards staff from management. PSW and nurses are worked until they are burnt out. Cannot get time off when you ask for it. And management wonder why people call in sick all the time? Short staffed every day. Work the staff they do have to death. Poor morale, toxic work environment. Management always giving staff more tasks, more work to do without a simple “Thank you” to their front line workers. ... Managers & DOC hide in their offices, never offer to help when short staffed (heard they were not allowed too?) Upper man either have no clue what’s going on or don’t care.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to communicate effectively with your staff. Treat them with a bit... an ounce of respect and see where that gets you, because currently your treat staff like garbage. You’re really not any better then the rest of us. (Even though you think you are)

    Cons

Mid and Upper Management take advantage of their roles, bullying, do not follow core values of the company HR does not support employees, they just smile and do what management wants to do....was actually told by HR that there was nothing she could do and just do what they say.

    Advice to Management

Check your ego’s You have talented people working for you, let them do their jobs without your micro management

I have been working at Halton Region full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Great coworkers. Close to home.

    Cons

Bullying at its worst! Upper and Middle management are given free reign to bully, intimidate, harass, insult, belittle, public ally embarrass employees and then overload them with work. No movement for those that don’t suck up to management. Talent, education, outstanding performance and good work ethics are not noticed or rewarded. Management is protected by HR. Whistle blowers about bullying are suspended. ... Been there over 10 years. Horrible place to work! Vile and toxic environment.

    Advice to Management

Need new management without nepotism! Halton’s old logo use to be “world class place to be” now it’s just “great place to live”. That’s about right. Just a great place to live. Definitely not a great place to work at.

I have been working at Halton Region full-time

    Pros

close to home. Nice coworkers. Gym and sports. Benefits and pension.

    Cons

Poorly run, disorganized and unprogressive. Upper Management does not know how to motivate people. Many poor performers who lack qualifications and are frustrating to work with, but they are tolerated. Staff are unmotivated. People are generally unhappy and stressed out because of upper management, depending on the department they work in. Low salary does not attract talented people. Lots of resources get wasted... in meetings and fixing screwups caused by senior staff not communicated with those in the trenches and just dictating or things being done without proper planning.
